4. 4. Zotero

incorporates the tools of the older reference management software (i.e. EndNote) by allowing you to store bibliographic information and export it as a formatted reference.

 5. 5. But then Zotero takes this further by:

incorporating the newer software applications (i.e. Delicious, iTunes) of:

interacting

tagging

searching

 6. 6. Zotero runs in the Firefox web browser .

This must be open in order to access your research collection.

The Zotero pane contains your entire collection:

Bibliographic references

Whole documents

Files

Notes

Web pages

 7. 7. This screenshot shows the three columns of the Zotero pane

The pane shows all your citations, collections, and notes

 8. 8. Zotero

On the next slide, I show the beginning of research work that I have begun on Caregivers’ resources. It includes information from web sites as well as books on/for caregivers.

The top half of the screen shows the MedlinePlus site that I have added to my research and the bottom half of the screen shows the Zotero pane.

 9. 10. Zotero

On the following slide I highlight a book that I have selected, How to Care for Your Aging Parents . You will note the bibliographic information for the book on the right pane.

 10. 12. Zotero

On the following slide, note the tool box in the right pane. One shows that tags can be added to any reference. I have created three tags for this collection thus far and they are noted in the left pane (circled in blue).

 11. 14. Zotero

Zotero would be particularly helpful for research staff and students as a way to organize their work and citations. It can bring all the items of the research (i.e.books, articles, images, web sites) together in one collection.

 12. 15. Zotero

Zotero certainly has library applications as well. In this initial work on caregivers’ resources that I have begun, I can see that this would be very helpful in that it would allow me to bring together a number of related resources. I would then be able to share this with interested staff.

 13. 16. Zotero

Zotero could be helpful in collection development as well. Again, the Caregivers’ resources project could allow me to bring together a group of core resources on this topic. The books and videos could be a “wish list” that I would be able to acquire as funds became available. I could share this with other librarians who are also interested in building a collection in this area.

 14. 17. Zotero

The “note” feature in Zotero would allow me to annotate the resources that I am considering adding to a collection or sharing with others. This could be helpful to users as they try to determine the best resource for their particular need.

 15. 18. Zotero

There is a learning curve with Zotero. Of the assignments I have completed during this class, I definitely feel like I will need to spend much more time on Zotero to enjoy the full benefits it has to offer. The good news is that its free and it has a good support network.
