Letter to the Editor
In your local newspaper, an article was written about the crimes and harms
perpetrated against the older population and the lack of protection for many of
them. The article ends with the question, “Who is responsible for protecting these
individuals?”
Resources: Letter to the Editor Grading Criteria located on your student website
Write a 700- to 1,050-word letter to the editor explaining what responsibilities
society has for protecting the rights of older adults.
Choose three of the questions below to address in your letter:
· When should families be responsible for related older adults? When should they
not? Does this only pertain to immediate family members?
· When should friends or acquaintances be responsible? What if their choices go
against the family’s wishes?
· When should hospitals, community service organizations, or other long-term
care facilities be allowed to make major decisions for older adult individuals?
· When should the government be responsible for making important decisions?
How involved should the government be in protecting the individual?
· Is there ever a circumstance when an older adult does not need outside
protection? When would that be? Explain your answers.

2. Rights and Documents Matrix
When working with aging adults, it is crucial that you understand their rights.
Some documents were created to maintain and protect their rights. Knowing what
these documents are, whom the documents help, and what purpose the
documents serve is extremely helpful. You use a matrix to create a quick-
reference guide for your convenience.
Resources: Rights and Documents Matrix Grading Criteria located on your
student website
Complete the matrix located on your student website. In the matrix, you must
describe various legal documents, identify who might need such documents, and
describe how these documents affect the rights of older adults and their loved
ones.

Case Study Complaints
Nationwide Training, a company specializing in developing and delivering
specialized training programs, has been asked to create a module regarding age
discrimination to be used in various states and in many different organizations.
The company has hired you to help develop this program and to ensure that the
information presented in it is accurate and factual. The company has given you a
list of case studies to be used for the training.
Resources: Case Study Complaints Grading Criteria located on your student
website.
Read the case studies and identify instances of age discrimination. Identify the
type of age discrimination—housing, employment, education, and so on—and the
issues at hand.
Write a 200-word sample letter of complaint for each case that the people
involved in each case might write. In your complaint letters, include which type of
discrimination is being addressed, the relevant issues from the case, and the
applicable laws intended to protect against such abuses.
