Historical Background of Mobile Phone
The first mobile telephone call was made on
June 17, 1946 a driver in St. Louis, Missouri.,
pulled out a handset from under his car's
dashboard, placed a phone call and made
history.
The introduction of hexagonal cells for
mobile phone base stations, invented in 1947
by Bell Labs engineers at AT&T, was further
developed by Bell Labs during the 1960s.
In 1970 Amos Joel of Bell Labs invented the
"call handoff" feature, which allowed a
mobile-phone user to travel through several
cells during the same conversation.
Historical Background of Mobile Phone
Martin Cooper of Motorola is widely
considered to be the inventor of the first
practical mobile phone for handheld use in a
non-vehicle setting.
Fully automatic cellular networks were first
introduced in 1983 by Engel
Joel and Richard Frenkiel.
Until the early 1990s, most mobile phones
were too large to be carried in a jacket pocket,
so they were usually permanently installed in
vehicles as car phones.
 The advancement of miniaturization and
smaller digital components, mobile phones got
smaller and lighter.
Historical Background of Mobile Phone
In 1989 Bangladesh Telecom Limited (BTL)
was awarded a license to operate cellular,
paging, and other wireless communication
networks.
In 1990 Hutchison Bangladesh Telecom
Limited (HBTL) was incorporated in
Bangladesh as a joint venture between BTL and
Hutchison Telecommunications (Bangladesh)
Limited.
HBTL began commercial operation in Dhaka
using the AMPS mobile technology in 1993
and became the 1st cellular operator in South
Asia.
Historical Background of Mobile Phone
 Later that year Pacific Motors bought
50% of BTL.
By 1996 HBTL was renamed as Pacific
Bangladesh Telecom Limited (PBTL) and
launched the brand name "Citycell
Digital" to market its cellular products.
Historical Background of Mobile Phone
Bangladesh total number of mobile user
36.42 million as of Jan-08.
Bangladesh's six mobile phone carriers
added 2.05 million new subscribers in January,
taking the total number of mobile user to 36.42
million in the one of the world's fastest
growing mobile market.
The number of mobile phone users in the
country rose nearly 58 percent in 2007
Features of Sets & Sims
•Attractive services like:
– less call rate at off pick hours
_ increase FnF number,
_free sms
_ bonus minute on incoming calls.
• Internet facilities.
•Entertainment, introducing FM radio.
•Camera.
Utility of Mobile Phone
•The catalyst is developments associated with the sending and
receiving of text, image, audio, and video over the phone.
• With its neat size, portability, computing data capacity, potential for
customization, and potential for connecting to other devices and
networks (through the Bluetooth protocol, for instance),
•the mobile now jostles with other media - television, newspapers,
film, music, the Internet - to bring us our culture and place us in it.
•Person-to-person, or peer-to-peer (p2p), short message service
(SMS) has led the way - with users popularising a technology seen as
an after-thought by its designers.
•Mobile text has become a widely used kind of writing. SMS is now
also commercially widespread, being used for information, alerts,
competitions and voting on television
