Get to Work
What does it mean to “Get to work?” This might be spoken by a foreman on a job
site where the employees have stretched out their lunch break. “Get to work!” is
yelled from a loud speaker, and all scatter back to the daily grindstone. What is the
overall attitude of the laborers? Maybe they’re thinking: “I have to get to work? Oh,
how I wish I could get to Friday! The paycheck! The weekend! Until then, well, I
have to work!”
Another aspect to the phrase “Get to work” has grace infused within its statement. I
am allowed to work! I am able to work! I get to work. This is the concept surround-
ing the motive of work for the Christian.
“But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us,
even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by
grace you have been saved— and raised us up with him and seated us with him in
the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, so that in the coming ages he might show the
immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. For by
grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the
gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are his work-
manship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand,
that we should walk in them” (Ephesians 2:4–10).
We are created in Christ Jesus for good works! We work as a result of grace! Our
work is because we love God.
“There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with pun-
ishment, and whoever fears has not been perfected in love. We love because he first
loved us” (1 John 4:18–19).
Some have possibly forgotten the love of God. They have not considered the cost;
therefore, work for the Kingdom has taken a back seat. A well-meaning Christian
might be like the foreman screaming from the loud speaker: “Get to work!”
May we all develop a love for God. A humbled understanding that He loved us
first, so we love Him second. Then we will truly understand that we…
Get to work.
