The Name Above Every Name
Part 2
The name of Jesus is a name that offers salva-
tion but it is also a name that is a comforting name.
There is consolation to be found in Jesus. Jesus told His
disciples “Let not your heart be troubled; you believe
in God, believe also in Me. 2 "In My Father's house
are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have
told you. I go to prepare a place for you. 3 "And if I
go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and
receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may
be also” (John 14:1-3).
When Jesus came to Jericho there was a blind
man by the name of Bartimaeus who cried out to Him for
mercy. Mark tells us that “And Jesus stood still, and
commanded him to be called. And they call the blind
man, saying unto him, Be of good comfort, rise; he
calleth thee: (Mk. 10:49, KJV). Newer translations ren-
der this as, “Take courage, stand up! He is calling for
you” (NASB). The comfort that Jesus gives is that which
brings courage. It allows the Christian to cope with all
that life can do to him.
There is the comfort that helps. We see this in
Paul’s second letter to the Corinthians when he writes
“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus
Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all com-
fort” (II Cor. 1:3). Then he adds “For as the sufferings
of Christ abound in us, so our consolation also
abounds through Christ” (II Cor. 3:5). This comfort
that is given to us is only through Christ. Because Jesus
suffered greatly He is able to comfort us in all our afflic-
tions. One man (explaining how his mother had lost a
son) said of her, “that is where she got her soft eyes and
that is why women rushed to her when they lost a child.”
People who lost a child knew that this woman under-
stood the hurt they were experiencing and could offer
them comfort. Likewise Jesus is the One who under-
stands all our trials and tribulations and that is why peo-
ple rushed to Him when they suffer. “For in that He
Himself has suffered, being tempted, He is able to
aid those who are tempted” (Heb. 2:18). “For we do
not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with
our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we
are, yet without sin” (Heb. 4:15).
And finally the name of Jesus is a conquering
name. When John saw the opening of the first seal (Rev.
6:2), he wrote, “And I looked, and behold, a white
horse. He who sat on it had a bow; and a crown was
given to him, and he went out conquering and to
conquer.” Later in the book see Jesus described and we
are told that “His eyes were like a flame of fire, and on
His head were many crowns. He had a name writ-
ten that no one knew except Himself” (Rev.
19:12). Jesus conquered and he is still conquering
today.
