May We Pray For Armistice
Armistice Day was established to remember what happened
on this day, November 11th
1918. It was the official end to the
Great World War, the war to end all wars. Armistice means
truce. An agreement from two sides of a fight, or war, to cease
fighting. The Germans, who were part of the truce, did not
hold up their end of the agreement. They invaded Poland 20 years, 10 months, and 1 day after
their truce. This changed the name of the Great World War to World War 1 as World War 2 broke
out. We now do not recognize this day as a day of truce for which it was intended. We remember
it for all the men and women who have fought, and continue to fight, to overthrow tyranny. We
remember tomorrow, November 11, 2019, as Veterans Day.
War happens when man decides to be “the Greatest” in this world. This has been true of every
dictator in our history. It was even thought to be a possible achievement by the Lord’s apostles.
Matthew 18:1 “At that time the disciples came to Jesus, saying, “Who then is greatest in the king-
dom of heaven?”
There is evidence that suggests Germany sought world domination in both World Wars. Hitler
sought to achieve this world’s power by using children. By manipulating the youth of Ger-
many, he was able to build an army and a twisted mindset that devastated the world with war. Je-
sus gave an answer to this desire for dominance with a child. In contrast, Jesus did not seek to
convert a child to an ideology, but to convert adults to thinking like a child.
“Then Jesus called a little child to Him, set him in the midst of them, and said, “Assuredly, I say
to you, unless you are converted and become as little children, you will by no means enter the
kingdom of heaven. Therefore, whoever humbles himself as this little child is the greatest in the
kingdom of heaven. Whoever receives one little child like this in My name receives
Me” (Matthew 18:2-5).
We always pray for Armistice. We pray for truce, for peace. Jesus gave His followers the exam-
ple. He had to do so again one chapter later in chapter 19:13-15. Jesus knew that man would need
the constant reminder. He also knew that we needed Armistice concerning our sins. He was
the only person who was able to bring about true peace.
“But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of
Christ. For he himself is our peace, who has made us both one and has broken down in his flesh
the dividing wall of hostilityby abolishing the law of commandments expressed in ordi-
nances, that he might create in himself one new man in place of the two, so making
peace, and might reconcile us both to God in one body through the cross, thereby killing
the hostility” (Ephesians 2:13-16). Richard Harp

Understanding the Bible

It is amazing to me that so many are of the opinion that
the Bible cannot be understood. Many consider the Bible
to be a “dead letter” and thus requiring an “official inter-
preter” to reveal its meaning. Some believe that mankind
in sin is dead in the sense that he cannot understand the
Bible unless he has an “enlightening” by the Holy Spirit.
I’ve know one individual that believed that some parts of
the Bible could not be understood and that God never
intended us to understand them. Example: the book of
Revelation was such that God didn’t expect us to under-
stand that book; He only required that we read it.
“Blessed is he that readeth, and they that hear the words
of this prophecy…” (Rev. 1:3a). Yet if one reads the full
verse he sees that one must also “keep those things which
are written in it” (Rev. 1:3b). How can one keep those
things which are written if one cannot understand what is
written? Now we will all agree with the apostle Peter
when he wrote that, “And account that the longsuffering
of our Lord is salvation; even as our beloved brother Paul
also according to the wisdom given unto him hath writ-
ten unto you; 16 As also in all his epistles, speaking in
them of these things; in which are some things hard to be
understood, which they that are unlearned and unstable
wrest, as they do also the other scriptures, unto their own
destruction” (2 Pet. 3:15, 16). Peter said that in what Paul
wrote there were “some things” not “all things” that are
“hard to understand” not “impossible to understand.”
God’s word can be understood when basic rules are fol-
lowed. First we need to “read” what God has written to
us! This may sound obvious but sometimes the obvious
is what’s missing. For example James tells us that “Yet
you do not have because you do not ask” (James 4:2). If
you want certain blessings from God you need to ask
Him. Likewise if you want to understand God’s word
you must read it. This was not something that was writ-
ten to “the official interpreter” of the church but “to the
saints who are in Ephesus and faithful in Christ Je-
sus” (1:2). God’s word is a “revelation.” “Which in other
ages was not made known unto the sons of men, as it is
now revealed unto his holy apostles and prophets by the
Spirit” (Eph. 3:5). The word “reveal” means to “uncover,
to unveil.” This revelation from God is in human lan-
guage. As Paul explains it, it is in words that can be
“written,” “read,’ and “understood.” The Christian relig-
ion is given in a “written revelation.” If it cannot be un-
derstood, is it a revelation? Unless the writings can be
understood the Christian religion cannot be understood
(2 Tim. 3:16, 17). How can the “man of God be thor-
oughly furnished unto all good works” if the Scriptures
cannot be understood? -to be continued
