Perilous diseases such
cancer, diabetes, and
cardiovascular disease cause
many deaths in the U.S.
every year.
Class Discussion
How do you know if
someone is having a
heart attack?
5
Let’s review the symptoms
of a heart attack.
6
7
Class Discussion
Who is likely to have a
heart attack?
What are the risk factors
for a heart attack?
8
9
The heart, a muscular pump, uses arteries and
veins to transport nutrient rich blood to tissues
throughout the body’s vascular system.
The health of the heart depends upon
unrestricted blood flow to the heart muscle.
Three major arteries supply nutrient
rich blood to the heart muscle.
Serious blockage to any one of these
arteries will precipitate a heart attack.
Deposits of fatty material and inflammation
or tears in the artery walls can create
dangerous clots and blockages.
Do you know anyone who has
had a stroke or a heart attack?
How do you know they might be
having a heart attack?
What should be done to help the
person?
15
Class Discussion
Class Discussion
How can heart disease be
reduced or prevented?
16
17
Life style changes can deter heart
disease and extend longevity.
Americans have been very informed about
the catastrophic results of heart disease for
a long time. However, another very
dangerous disease is afflicting more and
more Americans every year.
19
20
The increase in diabetes among Americans is
nearing epidemic levels. One contributing factor
to this increase appears to be the change in the
average daily diet of Americans which now has
five to ten times as much sugar as it did 50
years ago.
Type 2 diabetes is a result of the body developing a
resistance to insulin. Since the muscles cannot process the
higher levels of sugar in the blood stream, the body’s blood
vessels sustain serious damage.
Class Discussion
Do you know anyone who has
diabetes?
How should diabetics change their
life style so their health can be
improved?
22
Let’ summarize some of the things
that we know about diabetes.
 Go to the next frame
23
24
The probability of getting diabetes increases with
higher stress, lower physical activity, family history,
and excess food intake.
Since diabetes can have seriously adverse
effects on the body, people who have
diabetes usually have to monitor their blood
sugar and take corrective action.
27
Cancer is a variety of diseases that affect
many different parts of the body and
respond to a litany of treatments. For
example, leukemia affects the body in a
different way than a brain tumor.
Class Discussion
How many kinds of cancer
can you name?
What kind of treatments are
available?
28
There are many types of cancer.
The most common forms of skin cancer are basal
cell carcinoma, melanoma, and squamous cell
carcinoma. Since the color and shape of skin cancer
can vary, a physician needs to make the diagnosis.
Exposure to excessive amounts sunlight contributes
to the formation of skin cancers.
Cancer is a daunting disease that results
in out of control growth in body cells.
Cancer cells divide at a faster rate than
normal cells and encroach on and destroy
healthy tissue and organs.
This large tumor was removed from a cancer patient
to reduce the chances of damage to surrounding
tissue. After removal, physicians examined the patient
for signs of malignant tissue to determine if the
cancer had metastasized.
Class Discussion
Why do some people
get cancer while
others do not?
34
 Cancer has many different causes. Some
cancers are caused by environmental factors
such as chemical pollutants or excessive
exposure to the sun. Others are caused by
life style issues such as diet and exercise.
35
36
Cancer
causes of cancer
37
Many other diseases afflict our population and
are generally related to our genetic makeup or
our surrounding environment. Diseases of the
lungs can be very dangerous and may be caused
by genetic factors, air pollution, or smoking.
Discuss
What are some of the
diseases affect the
lungs?
38
39
Respiratory System Diseases
Discuss
What are the symptoms for
asthma?
What triggers asthma attacks?
How serious is an asthma
attack?
40
41
Many factors contribute to the
increase in deadly diseases in the
United States. Unfortunately, some
individuals are predisposed to disease
from birth. However, everyone can
benefit from lifestyle and
environmental changes.
42
Let’s Collaborate
Divide into pairs or
small groups for the
following discussion.
43
Discuss
 Can exercise reduce your risk of serious
disease?
 What kind of exercise do you get?
 How often do you exercise?
 Would you exercise more if you knew that
you would get a horrible disease because
you do not exercise enough?
44
Report Back
 How often do you exercise?
 Why do you think exercise is important?
 What might get you to exercise more
often?
45

  • 5. Class Discussion How do you know if someone is having a heart attack? 5
  • 6. Let’s review the symptoms of a heart attack. 6
  • 7. 7
  • 8. Class Discussion Who is likely to have a heart attack? What are the risk factors for a heart attack? 8
  • 9. 9
  • 10. The heart, a muscular pump, uses arteries and veins to transport nutrient rich blood to tissues throughout the body’s vascular system.
  • 11. The health of the heart depends upon unrestricted blood flow to the heart muscle.
  • 12. Three major arteries supply nutrient rich blood to the heart muscle.
  • 13. Serious blockage to any one of these arteries will precipitate a heart attack.
  • 14. Deposits of fatty material and inflammation or tears in the artery walls can create dangerous clots and blockages.
  • 15. Do you know anyone who has had a stroke or a heart attack? How do you know they might be having a heart attack? What should be done to help the person? 15 Class Discussion
  • 16. Class Discussion How can heart disease be reduced or prevented? 16
  • 17. 17
  • 18. Life style changes can deter heart disease and extend longevity.
  • 19. Americans have been very informed about the catastrophic results of heart disease for a long time. However, another very dangerous disease is afflicting more and more Americans every year. 19
  • 20. 20 The increase in diabetes among Americans is nearing epidemic levels. One contributing factor to this increase appears to be the change in the average daily diet of Americans which now has five to ten times as much sugar as it did 50 years ago.
  • 21. Type 2 diabetes is a result of the body developing a resistance to insulin. Since the muscles cannot process the higher levels of sugar in the blood stream, the body’s blood vessels sustain serious damage.
  • 22. Class Discussion Do you know anyone who has diabetes? How should diabetics change their life style so their health can be improved? 22
  • 23. Let’ summarize some of the things that we know about diabetes.  Go to the next frame 23
  • 24. 24
  • 25. The probability of getting diabetes increases with higher stress, lower physical activity, family history, and excess food intake.
  • 26. Since diabetes can have seriously adverse effects on the body, people who have diabetes usually have to monitor their blood sugar and take corrective action.
  • 27. 27 Cancer is a variety of diseases that affect many different parts of the body and respond to a litany of treatments. For example, leukemia affects the body in a different way than a brain tumor.
  • 28. Class Discussion How many kinds of cancer can you name? What kind of treatments are available? 28
  • 29. There are many types of cancer.
  • 30. The most common forms of skin cancer are basal cell carcinoma, melanoma, and squamous cell carcinoma. Since the color and shape of skin cancer can vary, a physician needs to make the diagnosis. Exposure to excessive amounts sunlight contributes to the formation of skin cancers.
  • 31. Cancer is a daunting disease that results in out of control growth in body cells.
  • 32. Cancer cells divide at a faster rate than normal cells and encroach on and destroy healthy tissue and organs.
  • 33. This large tumor was removed from a cancer patient to reduce the chances of damage to surrounding tissue. After removal, physicians examined the patient for signs of malignant tissue to determine if the cancer had metastasized.
  • 34. Class Discussion Why do some people get cancer while others do not? 34
  • 35.  Cancer has many different causes. Some cancers are caused by environmental factors such as chemical pollutants or excessive exposure to the sun. Others are caused by life style issues such as diet and exercise. 35
  • 37. 37 Many other diseases afflict our population and are generally related to our genetic makeup or our surrounding environment. Diseases of the lungs can be very dangerous and may be caused by genetic factors, air pollution, or smoking.
  • 38. Discuss What are some of the diseases affect the lungs? 38
  • 40. Discuss What are the symptoms for asthma? What triggers asthma attacks? How serious is an asthma attack? 40
  • 41. 41 Many factors contribute to the increase in deadly diseases in the United States. Unfortunately, some individuals are predisposed to disease from birth. However, everyone can benefit from lifestyle and environmental changes.
  • 42. 42
  • 43. Let’s Collaborate Divide into pairs or small groups for the following discussion. 43
  • 44. Discuss  Can exercise reduce your risk of serious disease?  What kind of exercise do you get?  How often do you exercise?  Would you exercise more if you knew that you would get a horrible disease because you do not exercise enough? 44
  • 45. Report Back  How often do you exercise?  Why do you think exercise is important?  What might get you to exercise more often? 45
  • 46. 46 Check-up and Review Raise your green card if you believe the statement is true or your red card if you think it is false.
  • 47. 47 True or False-1 Heart attack symptoms are the same for men and women.
  • 49. 49 True or False-2 Eating a diet high in saturated fats and red meat increases a person’s risk of having a heart attack or stroke.
  • 51. 51 True or False-3 Excess weight and low exercise increases a person’s chances of having diabetes, cancer, or a heart attack.
  • 53. 53 True or False-4 Smoking destroys body cells and increases the risk of getting cancer and having a heart attack.
  • 55. 55 True or False-5 There is very little that people can do to keep from dying early from diabetes or heart disease.
