Codes and Conventions


Adverts for TV programmes such as
documentaries tend to follow several codes and
conventions. I have looked at several examples
of adverts from print media and and have
looked for the similarities between them.







The logo for the channel is always prominent
and usually in the same space (for Channel
4, on the right of the image.)
The details of the programme title and
scheduling is always featured.
The font is always the same for each channel.
There is one colour scheme for each individual
advert.




There is always one image featured which is
striking and grabs the attention of the audience
immediately. The images are usually fairly
simple.
Most of the ads feature a catchy slogan. This
anchors the meaning of the image.






Often the same advert produced for both
television and radio.
Features two different voiceover – main
voiceover and ending voiceover (giving
scheduling info etc.)
Always informs the audience of scheduling
info and programme title. (via second
voiceover)










The name of the channel is always the final
piece of information mentioned in the ad.
Sound effects are often used in the
background, making the ads more interesting.
The voiceover is always given in fully Standard
English.
Slogan is spoken just before the shceduling
info.
Approximately 30 seconds long.

Codes and Conventions of Documentary Adverts

  • 2.  Adverts for TV programmes such as documentaries tend to follow several codes and conventions. I have looked at several examples of adverts from print media and and have looked for the similarities between them.

  • 5.     The logo for the channel is always prominent and usually in the same space (for Channel 4, on the right of the image.) The details of the programme title and scheduling is always featured. The font is always the same for each channel. There is one colour scheme for each individual advert.
  • 6.   There is always one image featured which is striking and grabs the attention of the audience immediately. The images are usually fairly simple. Most of the ads feature a catchy slogan. This anchors the meaning of the image.
  • 7.    Often the same advert produced for both television and radio. Features two different voiceover – main voiceover and ending voiceover (giving scheduling info etc.) Always informs the audience of scheduling info and programme title. (via second voiceover)
  • 8.      The name of the channel is always the final piece of information mentioned in the ad. Sound effects are often used in the background, making the ads more interesting. The voiceover is always given in fully Standard English. Slogan is spoken just before the shceduling info. Approximately 30 seconds long.
