Introduction • Drawing from his strong background in energy exploration and development, David Lawrence, Shell Upstream Americas former executive vice president, is the founder and chief executive of Lawrence Energy Group, LLC. Passionate about constructively addressing climate change and energy issues, David Lawrence was named the external advisory board chairman of the Yale Climate and Energy Institute (YCEI) after he retired from Shell in 2013. New studies suggests reducing aerosol emissions could actually worsen global warming. • A paper published in Nature Geoscience reveals that the increase in temperature as a result of increased carbon dioxide in the atmosphere may be higher than previously thought. Researchers led by Yale’s Trude Storelvmo and funded by the YCEI conducted a study that revealed certain sulfate components in aerosols emitted into the atmosphere have a cooling effect which tempers global warming.

Aerosol Emissions • Therefore, previous global warming studies, which did not take into account these cooling aerosols, may have underestimated the rise in the earth’s atmospheric temperatures. The researchers concluded that if sulfate pollutants were cleaned up, their cooling effect would be removed and the global warming effects of carbon dioxide emission would be higher.
