Notes: • Despite overlap, these realms involve different expectations, customers, discourse.
         • Both realms should benefit from advances in social networking.
         • Some interactions, like instant Messaging have both synchronous and asynchronous traits. Crippled by worst combination.
         • High-end collaboration & “meeting-ware”point to a future when synchronous presence will be attractive to adults.
         • Just because high-quality is “allowed” doesn’t guarantee it happens. Still, shouldn’t quality be possible?

In life, we assign scarce attention by priority.

Traits that affect priority Attributes affected by priority
•Orientation (attention-facing) • Volume or size of speech
•Proximity • Rendering (of avatars, video etc.)

                                   Global rep is low

Reputation systems are of hot interest (e.g. Netflix ratings contest) and huge commercial value. Systems that smoothly pass
rep data back and forth from personal to global will be far more subtle and effective than look-down or opt-in methods.

Hosts can either let users see reps or keep hidden. Third party pseudonymity can allow mask-personas to have high rep.

Users might even apply instant rep-style feedback to particular statements or products or adverts in real time.
Reputation scores can also affect discourse geometries, e.g. automatic arenas, and distance sensitivity of keyword alerts.

Hosts should be free to creatively mix/max traits and attributes, competing for user attention.

  • 5. A Close-up Look: Second Life - a company worth billions - sells “realms” to businesses, to link with employees, partners, customers. Only where is the communication and creative exchange that businesses (and sober users) want? Down here, in the lower left. See it? The same scroll/interrupting "chat” used on teletypes back in the 1970s. Thoughts limited to one sentence, at best. Yet, nobody considered this part - actual information exchange - to be worth improving. Till now.

  • 8. We still do all of those things! We track the “gist” of conversation, Time has effects, but doesn’t lobotomize! but can also make careful notes. Casual talk doesn’t have to be shallow. We adjust attention by criteria - We divide attention, shift tracks, adapt topic, time, reputation new priorities. (global /personal), direction, distance. Yet, you notice if folks mention your name - or other hot words Rules of courtesy matter . There are - even far away! consequences to reputation! And this is just a cocktail party! • 10. A Wish List of services to boost Online Discourse A Wish List of services to boost Online Discourse In life, we assign scarce attention by priority. Traits that affect priority Attributes affected by priority •Orientation (attention-facing) • Volume or size of speech •Proximity • Rendering (of avatars, video etc.) •Time • Gisting of contents:(font, size, sift- retain hi-impact words/meanings…) •Reputation • Semantic Services (alerts, smart- transcripts, omni-search.) •Topic/syntax • Info & action availability. Let’s Illustrate These Wishes As Simply As Possible. (Using “rectangles on a screen…”)
  • 11. Basics of our demo Actually quite intuitive once you try it!
  • 12. Trait #1: Separation of attention among other individuals Another way… The “Chat” Mode since 1967… Joe: …alternating-interrupting upward-scrolling snippets of text. Used on Carol: “Second Life” QuickTime™ and a TIFF (Uncompressed) decompressor are needed to see this picture. Alice: NO correlation with the way that humans actually talk to one another. No chance of expressing whole thoughts. Heed people as distinct individuals! Avatars with speech balloons. The human way of dividing attention. Let each person finish a sentence, even whole thoughts! Note: This separation is EXACTLY what folks now do (crudely) in IM (instant messaging)! Used on It is the reason why serious people prefer IM for “There” their rapid exchanges. Only why not do this separation inside real-time virtual worlds? Yes, this open many further problems... …not much of an improvement. …but because it is the human way, there are Still limits conversation to broken snippets! also solutions at hand…
  • 13. Trait #2: Orientation of Attention (viewing angle) affects prioritization (two slides) Our second neglected trait is attention angle. It should do more than just turn an avatar’s viewpoint. Potential solution to online antisocial behavior… This person is farther away but high in both reputation scores. Priority enhanced. Personal score is high Low rep irritant “yapper” (adjusted by slider) /hooligan easy to ignore. (Dozens of possible effects including transparency and “natural forces.) Global rep is low Reputation systems are of hot interest (e.g. Netflix ratings contest) and huge commercial value. Systems that smoothly pass rep data back and forth from personal to global will be far more subtle and effective than look-down or opt-in methods.
