1. Embedded Systems
My name is David and I work with Dell. This
presentation is about embedded systems.
What are they, and how do they work? For
more information about embedded systems

2. What is an embedded system?
An embedded system is a microprocessor used
as a component in another piece of technology
It is used in things like:
• cell phone
• digital camera
• appliances
• car antilock brake system
3. What an embedded system is not
• An embedded system is not a microprocessor
used in a “traditional” computing application
– desktop
– laptop
– workstation
4. 4 Major types of embedded systems
1. General
– similar to traditional computer systems, in a smaller package
– PDA’s
– portable games
2. Communications
– cell phones
3. Signal Processing
– video and audio
4. Control
– real time feedback control
– automotive
– aerospace
– appliances
5. Benefits of embedded systems
Embedded system applications have benefits over
traditional applications. These include:
• cost
• reliability
• safety
• real time critical
• interface to environment through sensors and
actuators
• “hybrid” behavior – interaction of continuous
dynamics with logic and finite state machines
