Good evening Everyone,
First of all, I would like to thank you all for coming to the last AWS meet up of 2014 and today I will be presenting a brief topic on the new AWS's features , currently been introduced at the AWS reinvent conference in Las Vegas but before we begin , let me just quickly introduce myself .
My name is Richard and I’m an undergraduate student currently completing the end of my second year of my I.T degree and I’m also a part of the Polar seven team.
So right now, AWS is big, how big, their revenue growth rate year over year is calculated to be above 40% which makes them the fastest growing IT company in the world. The reason why they are the market leader is because they try to make it as simple as possible for the client and developers to run their code without having to worry about any infrastructure maintenance and they do this by introducing tons of new feature year.
Security is one of the biggest issue cloud is facing right now and the way AWS protect your data is through the use of encryption keys. So recently they developed a new feature called the Key Management Service (KMS) that allow you to create and control the use of the encryption keys.
So basically you have the ability to create, rotate, disable and set user policy, all in a centralized location. You may even integrate the service with other AWS's product such as Amazon Elastic Block Store (EBS), Amazon Simple Storage Service (S3), and Amazon Redshift and use only 1 master key to encrypt all the
data.
The next feature I would like to introduce to you is the AWS Config management service which is used to
Provide a deeper insight into your existing AWS resource inventory .So you may use this service to answer question such as how a resource was configured at a point in time or what kind of AWS resources are running on the account and does that particular resource have VPC running so it basically give you full visibility to all your AWS resources and it can also shows you the relationship
Between those resources. This service will also give you full history of all the configuration changes and the impact it has toward all the other resources .
The other feature I would like to introduce to you is called AWS Code Commit. This is a fully managed code repository in cloud just like github but with no size limits on the repositories or files. AWS Code commit will elimate the need for you to operate your own source control system. This service support the standard functions of a Git allowing you to work seamlessly with your existing git-based tools
Another feature, I'm excited to talk about is Amazon Aurora which is a brand new database engine. Aurora is compatible with MySQL and it allows you to migrate from MySQL within just a few clicks. Amazon Aurora has 5x the performance than a standard MySQL implementation.
Amazon Aurora is very durable and the database is automatically backup to S3 to achieve high availability. Aurora is self-healing so it will automatically repair any failures in the background.
Another feature I would like to introduce to you is called AWS Lambda, An event - driven computing service for dynamic application. AWS Lambda is a compute service that runs your code in response to events and automatically runs your code on high availability compute infrastructure and performs all the administration of the underlying compute resources, including server and operating system maintenance, capacity provisioning and automatic scaling, code and security patch deployment, and monitoring and logging. So you need to do is just write the code.
.The aim is to run code without having managed any infrastructure and let Lambda take of the underlying infrastructure.
So for Lambda, you’re not charge for how many servers are running but instead you're only charge per request and the time it take to run the code which makes it a cost effective solution for dynamic application.
