WHAT SHE BELIEVES?
• She is known for her theory which is based on music editing. It is therefore based around four
concepts that relate to the way a music video is manufactured. These concepts are as
follows
1. Narrative
2. Editing
3. Camera movement and framing
4. Diegesis
Narrative
• She feels that a narrative is a direct visual response to the music and therefore what is
happening onscreen is reflected by the lyrics the artists is singing. However forVernallis
sometimes the narrative may not be completed and therefore been seen as partial which
can make the video seen disjointed or disconnected.
• Our music video (CRAZY) has a narrative from start to end all of which go hand in hand wit
the lyrics that Tyrell is singing. The reason why we did this was because we wanted to make
sure that our audience was able t relate and connect with the song, in there own way. In the
chorus of the song the work ‘CRAZY’ is repeat throughout wereTyrell is moving his hand in
a circular motion in time with the song.
EDITING
• Carol states that a clear convention of a music video is that some may break or disrupt the idea of continuity editing. She then goes on
to say that some videos have editing that us distinctive to that genre or that music video in particular. These can include….
1. Jump cuts
2. Cutting with the lyrics
3. Breaking the 30 degree rule
4. Juxtapose frames
5. Graphic matches
• In our video we have a lot of different editing styles. We have a variety of Juxtapose the compare and contrast to one another. We a
shot when the guy is alone feeling sorry for himself followed by the female going out with her friends and having a good time ,we
wanted to include these because it showed the different between the two. In our genre the girl is normally the one we is heart
broken however in our video we have done the opposite and the female is the strong independent one.
• It good to have these editing techniques throughout the video because it makes it that extra special.
CAMERA MOVEMENT AND FRAMING
• Vernallis states that establishing camera movements are one of the key things in a music video. The
style of camera movement that you choose to use can be very distinctive to your music video itself.
1. Close-ups
2. Long shots
3. Pan
4. Establishing shot
• There are many different shots that you can use in a music video that will make it stand out to the
rest and to your audience as well. In our music videos we manly used close-up shots because we
was really able to capture his facial expression which really said a lot. When the couple we used
long shots because we able to get a better view of what the were doing, and this really fitted well
with the music video, itself.
DIEGESIS
• In terms of Diegesis according toVernallis sees this as the world of the music video and
therefore explains that this can be revealed quite slowly. This therefore means the
repetitions of certain movement that may be seen throughout the video itself, however they
may not always be used and therefore can be disrupted.
• In our music video we used the repetitions in the chorus .As the word crazy was repeated, we
made sure that his actions were the same, as the screen turned around his hands were
moving in a circular motion. We wanted to do this because we felt like our audience could
get a better understanding that he is in fact going crazy and is unable to cope with certain
things.
