Muskrat Falls, Labrador, Canada
Construction work: Astaldi Canada
Type of structure: Hydro power plant
Facts: taking into account the most stringent environmental conditions, LEED certified for sustainable construction
Construction time: 2014 – 2017
The 824-MW hydraulic power plant at Muskrat Falls in Canada consists of a turbine building with four turbines, three dam constructions, six spillway piers, dividing and supporting walls and northern and southern operating areas. It is the second-largest hydraulic power plant in Canada. Temperatures that fall to –40°C are not infrequent on site and represent a huge challenge for construction work. Doka provided a project-specific formwork solution and set new standards for the measurement of concrete strength with the innovative Concremote system.
Products used: Large-area formwork Top 50, Column formwork Top 50, Dam formwork D22, Load-bearing tower Staxo 100, Framed formwork Framax Xlife, Formwork planning, Formwork Instructor, pre-assembly, Concremote
Challenge:
• temperatures as low as -40 °C and constantly changing weather conditions
• due to project size – on-site storage and assembly of formwork on-site subject to restrictions
• customized shape of outer turbine walls demand that concrete and steel joins seamlessly
• working safely and quickly
Project solution:
• individually adaptable formwork solutions for different weather conditions that were heated as needed. This made adherence to the construction schedule feasible.
• use of only one load-bearing system on the site thanks to the universal usability of the Load-bearing tower Staxo 100. It is made for economical shoring of thin as well as 4 m thick floors of the powerhouse.
• ladder systems such as stair towers and ladders built into the formwork solutions guarantee safe accessroutes.
• Concrete strength measurement with Concremote is made for exact monitoring of hydration heat development. Stripping times, treatment times and the time for pre-stressing are derived online directly from the measured values. This allows a construction process that is safe and fast.
• pre-assembled platforms and formwork panels supplied by Doka's Toronto branch resulted in accelerating the construction workflow and reducing on-site personnel costs
• just-in-time deliveries permitted responding even to workflow changes with short notice
• special formwork for outside walls of the turbines so that steel liner could be affixed without any problems
Schiphol, Amsterdam, Netherlands
Type: cantilevered bridge across the Amsterdam-Rhine Canal
Construction work: Volker Wessels, Boskalis, Hochtief, DIF
This large-scale project involved the construction of a total of three bridges with a span of 142 metres and an overall length of approx. 284 metres across the Amsterdam-Rhine Canal. It was particularly important during and after the construction of this bridge to maintain the shipping traffic along this important trade route.
Type of structure: monolithic
Length of structure: 284 m
Height of structure: 41 m
Span width: 142 m
Cycle time: 7-day cycle
Construction time: 2014 – 2015
Products used: Cantilever forming traveller, Load-bearing tower Staxo 100, Framed formwork Framax Xlife, Large-area formwork Top 50, Climbing formwork K, Dokaflex, Platform system Xsafe plus, Edge protection system XP, Ladder system XS
Challenge:
• restricted clearance – keeping ship traffic flowing below
• building 3 bridges at once
Project solution:
• to begin with, piers and pier heads are built at both banks
• thanks to the Cantilever forming traveller, traffic below was unimpeded during construction of the south, north and centre bridges with their respective widths of 17.60 m, 21.50 m and 11.50 m
• the modular rentable construction adapts flexibly to the project-specific shapes of the three bridges
• construction of 14 bridge sections up to approx. 5 m in weekly cycle
• safe working conditions thanks to built-in Guardrail systems and Access systems
Solbakk Tunnel, Stavanger, Norway
Construction work: Marti IAV Solbakk DA
Type of structure: partly monolithic
Construction time: 2015 – 2016
The Solbakk Tunnel is 14 km in length and is one of three tunnels forming the Ryfast Project, one of the longest underwater road tunnel projects in the world. The current ferry connection between Stavanger and Tau will be replaced by this tunnel at a maximum depth of 290 metres beneath the sea with two separate tunnels carrying traffic in either direction.
Portal:
Length of tunnel: 185 m each
Clear width: 9.18 m | Clear height: 7.95 m
Mining-type tunnel:
Clear width: 10.38 m | Clear height: 7.69 m
Products used: Heavy-duty supporting system SL-1, Large-area formwork Top 50, Working scaffold Modul
Challenge:
• regular geological testing during advancement in order to pour the tunnel's inner shell in case there is loose rock
• formwork operations take place while the conveyor is running
Project solution:
• pre-assembled units allow the formwork traveller to be moved quickly to the tunnel
location where it is used
• sufficient space for removal of materials via conveyor belt during planning and execution of the formwork traveller will aid in rapid and unimpeded construction progress

• construction of low and tall pylons in unusual shape
• fast and safe assembly of the Composite forming carriage
• adherence to tight construction schedule
Project solution:
• building the piers with demanding shape
• a combination of Large-area formwork Top 50 and Climbing formwork MF240 was selected for the lower piers. The taller piers were formed quickly and smoothly with the hydraulic Automatic climbing formwork Xclimb 60.
• construction of steel trough in incremental launching method and subsequent casting of deck-slab with Composite forming carriage from Doka
• fast assembly thanks to the ability to pre-assemble a large portion of formwork units can be preassembled that are put together on-site from the safety of ground-level
• thanks to system-based 'construction kit' the Composite forming carriage can be reused immediately on another project once the bridge has been completed

Juma Al Majid Tower, Dubai, United Arab Emirates
Contractor: Ali & Sons Contracting Company L.L.C
Height: 210 m
Number of storeys: 50
Type of structure: residential highrise
Surrounded by a diversity of skyscrapers, the formwork and protection screen systems by Doka in their characteristic sunny yellow colour form a landmark in their own right. In this case they ensure rapid and safe building progress in the construction of the 50-storey Juma Al Majid Tower residential skyscraper.
Products used: Large-area formwork Top 50, Climbing formwork 150F, Automatic climbing formwork SKE50 plus (corewall formwork), Automatic climbing formwork SKE100 (shearwall formwork), Automatic climbing formwork SKE50 (shearwall formwork), Protection screen Xclimb 60, Dokaflex 1-2-4, Panel floor formwork Dokadek 30, Load-bearing tower Staxo 40 & Staxo 100, Doka Table Lifting System (TLS)
Challenge:
A fully crane independent solution was required due to limited space on site, tight schedule and strict regulations with the metro being located close by.
Project solution:
Where previously concrete placing booms (CPB) were located on the slab itself, Doka’s SKE100 plus allows the CPB to be self-climbing, helping to maintain the pace of completing core walls in five-day cycles and the shear walls and columns in four.

Construction work: GROSSMANN Bau GmbH & Co. KG, Rosenheim
A very unusual building, the ESO Supernova Planetarium and Visitor Centre, is being built at the headquarters of the European Organisation for Astronomical Research in the Southern Hemisphere (ESO). The inclined and at the same time curved walls present a considerable challenge with regard to the formwork. Each concreting cycle is different. Each formwork element is a unique item. It will fit in only one single place of the structure. And everything has to be delivered and returned again just-in-time. The Doka Formwork Technicians have developed an economical concept to master this, complete with 3D planning, element assembly and dismantling and logistics.
