2. WOMEN SOLDIERS
Both the Union and
Confederate armies
forbade the enlistment of
women. Women soldiers
of the Civil War therefore
assumed masculine
names, disguised
themselves as men, and
hid the fact they were
female.
3. Because they passed
as men, it is
impossible to know
with any certainty how
many women soldiers
served in the Civil
War. Estimates place
as many as 400-650
women soldiers.
4. SARAH SEELYE
Records from the AGO show
that Sarah Edmonds, a
Canadian by birth, assumed
the alias of Franklin
Thompson and enlisted as a
private in the Second
Michigan Infantry in Detroit
on May 25, 1861. Her duties
while in the Union army
included regimental nurse
and mail and despatch
carrier.
5.
Most women, from the
North and from the
South, served as nurses,
caring for the wounded
soldiers. Without their
efforts, many, many
more men would have
died from diseases after
being wounded on the
battlefield.
6. CLARA BARTON
Clara Barton, who
later founded the
American Red Cross,
was probably the
most famous Civil
War nurse.
7. ROSE GREENHOW
One of the most
famous spies was
"Wild Rose"
Greenhow. She
carried messages
written in a secret
code until she was
captured and put in
prison.
8. HARRIET TUBMAN
Harriet Tubman worked for
the Union army during the
Civil War. Harriet worked
as a nurse, cook, and spy
during the war. She knew
the countryside very well
from her years on the
Underground Railroad,
and this knowledge was a
valuable asset to the
Union army.
9.
It is estimated that,
during the Civil War,
thousands of women
served as spies,
nurses, hundreds
served in other
occupations, and
approximately 80
were wounded or
killed.
