Wikiwijs is an open digital learning platform with the following goals: 1) Stimulate the development and use of open, flexible learning resources to improve the quality of education. 2) Increase the quality of education through up-to-date learning resources. 3) Strengthen the position of teachers. It is organized around principles of availability, professionalization, and user-generated content. Quality is ensured through user ratings and reviews as well as review by educational institutions. All content is open-source and can be reused or remixed through the platform's tools.

Presentation at: OER15 - 6th International Conference on Open Education – “'Mainstreaming Open Education” Cardiff, 15 April 2015 Although Open Educational Resources (OER) have been one of the mainstays of discussion on open education over the past decade, we are now noticing a renewed attention of policy makers in the topic. Whilst many really cool initiatives are to be found around the world (for instance in Germany http://ow.ly/EdLOX ), OER can really only realize its potential in the mainstream, if it tackles mainstream problems. That means that it is important to re-start the discussion on OER so that there is a focus on OER as a means to an end, i.e. OER contributing to improving various aspects of education (see blog from TJ Bliss from the Hewlett Foundation: http://tjbliss.org/musings-on-oer-policy/ ). The Open University’s OER Research Hub, for instance, poses hypotheses about the benefits of OER (http://oerresearchhub.org/collaborative-research/hypotheses/). The most recent CERI/OECD report on OER (http://www.oecd.org/edu/ceri/open-educational-resources-oer.htm ), looks instead for typical problems in education systems first and searches for solutions which involve OER production and use. In a second step it looks to see whether the expected potential of OER is being realised. In this way, it can also formulate an assessment of the status quo and encourage a discussion on what policy interventions can do to help OER realise this potential. The report, which will be published late spring 2015, identifies six typical problems in education, which can benefit from OER production and use.

While open educational resources (OER) increase in availability, sophistication, quality and adoption around the world there remains a gap in the utilization and contribution to open educational practices, amongst faculty. While an official definition for open educational practices is still emerging, we align ourselves with the following articulation which suggests nascent practices enabled by the affordances of OER and open technology infrastructure allowing for the transformation of learning (Camilleri & Ehlers, 2011) which invites students contribution, engagement, and ownership of knowledge resources thereby flattening the balance of power in student/teacher relationships (McGill, Falconer, Dempster, Littlejohn, & Beetham, 2013). Arguments have been made at various levels to engage and support faculty in using open educational practices – at the institutional level to support strategic advantage through lower cost access to OER textbooks and educational materials (Mulder, 2011; Carey, Davis, Ferreras, & Porter, 2015); through incentives which support faculty engagement with instructional designers in the co-creation of reusable high-impact courseware (Conole & Weller, 2008; DeVries & Harrison, 2016); through the experimentation and adoption of the practice of teaching-in-the-open (Veletsianos, 2013); and in the forming of learning communities across institutions (Petrides, Jimes, Middleton‐Detzner, Walling, & Weiss, 2011). This session will focus on the stakeholder role of the educational developer, often situated within teaching and learning centres, whose responsibility may include support of more open practices in higher education, to meet various institutional goals and objectives. Teaching and learning centres are well positioned to support change, review program and course objectives and quality, support professional development in the context of “open”, and support teaching and learning at the departmental, program, and course level. Open educational practices can be situated as a tool to support these change initiatives and provide new conceptualizations of teaching and learning (Bossu, & Fountain, 2015).

zkStudyClub - Reef: Fast Succinct Non-Interactive Zero-Knowledge Regex Proofs

This paper presents Reef, a system for generating publicly verifiable succinct non-interactive zero-knowledge proofs that a committed document matches or does not match a regular expression. We describe applications such as proving the strength of passwords, the provenance of email despite redactions, the validity of oblivious DNS queries, and the existence of mutations in DNA. Reef supports the Perl Compatible Regular Expression syntax, including wildcards, alternation, ranges, capture groups, Kleene star, negations, and lookarounds. Reef introduces a new type of automata, Skipping Alternating Finite Automata (SAFA), that skips irrelevant parts of a document when producing proofs without undermining soundness, and instantiates SAFA with a lookup argument. Our experimental evaluation confirms that Reef can generate proofs for documents with 32M characters; the proofs are small and cheap to verify (under a second).
