acquire the skills necessary
to make you a more
successful student in your
subject area.

Weekly Arranged Lab Hours?

What do I need to use the
Skills Center?
1. Your Student Network Account
(username & password)

2. Your Student ID
3. Your Lab Assignment - Your instructor will provide
an assignment list detailing what you will work on each week.

4. Your Material Check-out Card - Available at the
Skills Center front counter.
You will keep your Material Check-out Card for the entire semester.
To start: Scan in
and select your class
Read 142
Math 40
Bio 101

Scan the
barcode on
your ID
under the
scanner.
(You will hear
one beep)

Select your class from the list by
touching it on the screen.

NOTE: IF YOU DO NOT SCAN IN YOU WILL NOT RECEIVE CREDIT!!!
Check in: Present your
Material Check-out Card
• Fill out required
information on the
front of the Material
Check-out Card.
• Hand your Material
Check-out Card to the
aide at the counter.

You will be
ASSIGNED a seat.
Please remain in the
carrel assigned to you
and inform staff if you
need to change seats.

Log on using your student ID
number as the Username

2. Put in your network password
• New students - your six digit birthday.
• Returning Students – the same
password as last semester

Once you log on, you may
change your password.

See an Instructional Assistant if you have trouble changing your password.

Instructional Assistant For Help
when a
computer, program
, or other
equipment is not
working properly

when you have
trouble printing or
accessing manuals

when you have
trouble interpreting
the meaning of a
question or finding
the right answer
when another lab
user is disturbing
you

Staff are here to help you get the most
out of your time in the lab.
Receiving Credit
For Your Work
• Once you have completed your
assignment, make sure to have the
instructor initial your answer sheet or
printout.
• You will submit the assignment to your
instructor to receive credit for it.

• Your lab attendance and lab assignments
count as part of your class grade.
Follow the rules
► To receive lab credit, only visit the center during the
Reading 142 scheduled times.

► Students cannot count any time spent in the lab if they
are supposed to be in a class at the same time, even if
that class is canceled or let out early.
Do not write in Skills Center materials or remove any
materials from the Center.
Be courteous to other lab users:

 No cell phone use. Turn off or mute your phone
 No music listening devices (No ear buds)
 No food or drink allowed in the Center
 No study groups or loud talking
 No guests

You are not allowed to:






work in groups while in the Skills Center
use Facebook, Twitter or other social
networking sites
surf the Internet or play online games
type your homework assignments
chat online or download software
Failure to comply with these rules may result
in a loss of computer privileges.
Campus printing
Printing costs $0.05
per page and MUST
be purchased in the
BOOKSTORE.

Retain your RECEIPT
from the bookstore.
If there is a problem
printing, lab personnel will
ask you for the receipt.

Selecting the printer
Before you press
OK, make sure
you are sending
your document
to the Skills
Center printer in
Room 801.
Check out:
Log off the computer
• Click on the
Office Button
(at the bottom left of
your screen)

• Click on Log Off
Check out: Scan out
Scan your ID only

If you do NOT scan out, you
will receive NO minutes for
the time you spent in the lab.

You may receive credit for a maximum of
50 minutes per week, per class.
Additional time does NOT roll over to another week.
Check out:

Return your Carrel Cards and
retrieve your Material Check-out Card
When finished, return
the Carrel Cards &
materials to the counter.

Common Errors!
• Don’t forget to scan in AND out!
• Don’t forget to choose your class from the
screen
• Don’t forget to look at the screen as you are
checking in and out to confirm you have
scanned correctly
• Don’t come in when you are scheduled to be
in another class.
• Don’t forget to ask staff for help if you have
any questions about scanning

Read 142 Syllabus Statement
• Students who skip a week or a portion of a week’s
requirement may not make up any missed time in
subsequent weeks, nor will time completed beyond 50
minutes be credited toward future weeks.
• Failure to attend any of the weekly arranged lab hours will
constitute an absence in accordance with the instructor’s
attendance policy.
• In addition to contributing to the instructor’s absence
policy, failure to attend three (3) weekly arranged lab
sessions may result in the student being dropped from the
class. Students who attend only a portion of their weekly
lab requirement will be deemed absent for that week.
Read 142 Workshop Statement
• Read 142 workshop assignments enhance the course
curriculum and are conducted by Reading faculty.
• Workshop assignments can only be used in place of a lab
assignment designated by the course instructor as an
“OPEN” week to attend a workshop. A “CLOSED” week
indicates the student should NOT attend a workshop.

• If a student would like to attend a workshop, the student
can sign up in the Skills Center. Workshops are limited to
12 students, and may not accommodate all students who
are interested in attending.
• To receive attendance credit for the workshop, students
should scan in at the room the workshop is being held.
Important Reminders!
• You must attend lab for 50 minutes per
week. Extra time will not roll over to
another week.
• 49 (or less) minutes is an absence.
• You will not receive lab time credit if
you attend while you are supposed
to be in another class – even if that
class was cancelled for the day.

What does the Skills Center have to offer me? • a quiet and structured environment that helps you practice the concepts you are learning in class • instructors and instructional assistants to answer your questions The Skills Center is an individual skill development lab. While here, you will acquire the skills necessary to make you a more successful student in your subject area.
  • 4. What are the Weekly Arranged Lab Hours? READ 142 MON TUE WED 8:45am 8:45am – 2:05pm – 2:05pm You must attend lab for 50 minutes EVERY week. THUR FRI 8:45am 8:45am 11:00am – 7:00pm – 7:00pm – 2:00pm If you visit outside of these hours your time will not be counted towards your weekly time requirement!
  • 5. What do I need to use the Skills Center? 1. Your Student Network Account (username & password) 2. Your Student ID 3. Your Lab Assignment - Your instructor will provide an assignment list detailing what you will work on each week. 4. Your Material Check-out Card - Available at the Skills Center front counter. You will keep your Material Check-out Card for the entire semester.
  • 6. To start: Scan in and select your class Read 142 Math 40 Bio 101 Scan the barcode on your ID under the scanner. (You will hear one beep) Select your class from the list by touching it on the screen. NOTE: IF YOU DO NOT SCAN IN YOU WILL NOT RECEIVE CREDIT!!!
  • 7. Check in: Present your Material Check-out Card • Fill out required information on the front of the Material Check-out Card. • Hand your Material Check-out Card to the aide at the counter. You will be ASSIGNED a seat. Please remain in the carrel assigned to you and inform staff if you need to change seats. • Ask for the materials you need. READ 142
  • 8. Log On to the Computer 1. Log on using your student ID number as the Username 2. Put in your network password • New students - your six digit birthday. • Returning Students – the same password as last semester Once you log on, you may change your password. See an Instructional Assistant if you have trouble changing your password.
  • 9. Ask The Instructor or Instructional Assistant For Help when a computer, program , or other equipment is not working properly when you have trouble printing or accessing manuals when you have trouble interpreting the meaning of a question or finding the right answer when another lab user is disturbing you Staff are here to help you get the most out of your time in the lab.
  • 10. Receiving Credit For Your Work • Once you have completed your assignment, make sure to have the instructor initial your answer sheet or printout. • You will submit the assignment to your instructor to receive credit for it. • Your lab attendance and lab assignments count as part of your class grade.
  • 11. Follow the rules ► To receive lab credit, only visit the center during the Reading 142 scheduled times. ► Students cannot count any time spent in the lab if they are supposed to be in a class at the same time, even if that class is canceled or let out early. Do not write in Skills Center materials or remove any materials from the Center. Be courteous to other lab users:  No cell phone use. Turn off or mute your phone  No music listening devices (No ear buds)  No food or drink allowed in the Center  No study groups or loud talking  No guests Continued
  • 12. Follow the rules (part 2) The Skills Center follows the Fullerton College Acceptable Use Policy for computer usage. You may review this policy at: http://support.fullcoll.edu/accept.htm You are not allowed to:      work in groups while in the Skills Center use Facebook, Twitter or other social networking sites surf the Internet or play online games type your homework assignments chat online or download software Failure to comply with these rules may result in a loss of computer privileges.
  • 13. Campus printing Printing costs $0.05 per page and MUST be purchased in the BOOKSTORE. Retain your RECEIPT from the bookstore. If there is a problem printing, lab personnel will ask you for the receipt. Selecting the printer Before you press OK, make sure you are sending your document to the Skills Center printer in Room 801.
  • 14. Check out: Log off the computer • Click on the Office Button (at the bottom left of your screen) • Click on Log Off
  • 15. Check out: Scan out Scan your ID only If you do NOT scan out, you will receive NO minutes for the time you spent in the lab. You may receive credit for a maximum of 50 minutes per week, per class. Additional time does NOT roll over to another week.
  • 16. Check out: Return your Carrel Cards and retrieve your Material Check-out Card When finished, return the Carrel Cards & materials to the counter. READ 142 A Lab Aide will return your Material Check-out Card at the front desk. Look at the NAME on the card to be sure it is your card.
  • 17. How do I check my lab time? Your weekly total time will appear on the screen. Makes sure you have the required 50 minutes for the week. If there is a problem, let Skills Center staff know immediately.
  • 18. Warning! Common Errors! • Don’t forget to scan in AND out! • Don’t forget to choose your class from the screen • Don’t forget to look at the screen as you are checking in and out to confirm you have scanned correctly • Don’t come in when you are scheduled to be in another class. • Don’t forget to ask staff for help if you have any questions about scanning
  • 19. Non-Credit Lab Enrollment Please make sure to click on the Yes, By Instructor box on your screen. This message will keep appearing unless you select YES. By selecting this box, you are agreeing to enroll in a non-credit lab course that will allow you to work in the Skills Center. This free course will not affect your GPA, but will show up on your transcripts.

  • 21. Read 142 Syllabus Statement • Students who skip a week or a portion of a week’s requirement may not make up any missed time in subsequent weeks, nor will time completed beyond 50 minutes be credited toward future weeks. • Failure to attend any of the weekly arranged lab hours will constitute an absence in accordance with the instructor’s attendance policy. • In addition to contributing to the instructor’s absence policy, failure to attend three (3) weekly arranged lab sessions may result in the student being dropped from the class. Students who attend only a portion of their weekly lab requirement will be deemed absent for that week.
  • 22. Read 142 Workshop Statement • Read 142 workshop assignments enhance the course curriculum and are conducted by Reading faculty. • Workshop assignments can only be used in place of a lab assignment designated by the course instructor as an “OPEN” week to attend a workshop. A “CLOSED” week indicates the student should NOT attend a workshop. • If a student would like to attend a workshop, the student can sign up in the Skills Center. Workshops are limited to 12 students, and may not accommodate all students who are interested in attending. • To receive attendance credit for the workshop, students should scan in at the room the workshop is being held.
  • 23. Important Reminders! • You must attend lab for 50 minutes per week. Extra time will not roll over to another week. • 49 (or less) minutes is an absence. • You will not receive lab time credit if you attend while you are supposed to be in another class – even if that class was cancelled for the day.
