Lancashire Mining Museum
On the edge of Chat Moss, in an area once full of collieries, lies the picturesque village of
Astley Green. In the heart of the village stands Astley Green Colliery Museum which, but for
the foresight of Lancashire County Council and several leading figures within the
community, would have suffered the same fate as the other collieries in the area, total
demolition. It was the uniqueness of the 3,300 hp twin tandem compound steam winding
engine that brought the demolition to a halt. As the result of the intervention, the museum
houses Lancashire's only surviving headgear and engine house, both of which now have
listed building status.

Lowry Art Gallery
Lowry specialised in depicting Salford's heavily industrialised town with his little pale
stickmen and his smoky factories. His work is very distinctive and you can find it in spades
here in a frequently changing exhibition, plus you can find out all about the man himself, his
life and his history. As well as this there's plenty of other stuff for all tastes, including a very
interesting exhibition entitled 'Art and Advertising: A Creative Fusion', exploring the
relationship between advertising and art. As a media buff I love this kind of thing.

Trafford Park Heritage Centre
The Heritage Centre was developed as part of the Centre's contribution to understanding
the history of the people who worked and lived within the industrial estate where the main
Centre is located.
Trafford Park, part of the ancestral home of the De Trafford family was a originally a very
beautiful park and farm land extending over 1183 acres. At its heart was De Trafford Hall
which boasted over 40 bedrooms, servants' quarters and a private chapel. Unfortunately,
the Hall was destroyed in the blitz of 1940.
