This year for Globilization we touched on several topics that effect the world. Our task was to choose things in our city (Philadelphia) that emulates globalization through the topics.
2. Migration and
Colonization
This picture kind of emulates the amount of diversity and
immigration that has come to America since the early 1900s but
has still produced hundreds of new immigrants. This girl, Gracie
Wagenveld, who was adopted into this country 15 years ago, was
a product of immigration due to an increase need for rights and
liberties that America can supply.
In the 21st century, we can come to a place in our nations history
where immigration has come to another high compared to the
beginning of the 20th. According to this article (http://
www.urban.org/publications/900417.html) in 2000 a total of
somewhere between eleven and fourteen million immigrants
have come to America. Some of these have been legal but a
majority of been illegal.

3. Politics/ International
Law and Organizations
In the picture you are brought to the family court
building located at 34 South 11th Street. In this
building a majority of the jurisdiction only is available
for the families in the city of Philadelphia, but there is
one aspect that differs into a global courthouse. They
help to adopt children from all over the world that
want to come here.
In recent years along with the rise in immigration
statures, adoption from around from around the
world to the US has raised as well. According to this
article (http://www.prb.org/Articles/2003/
InternationalAdoptionRateinUSDoubledinthe1990s.as
px), the rate of adoption to the US in 2001 was about
20,000 adoptions where as in 1989 it was around
7,000 adoptions.

4. Environment and
Energy
The global stretch to try and save our environment can be seen here at our home in Philadelphia. The PECO building has been named
one of the greenest buildings in all of Philadelphia. They installed a total of 45,000 feet of vegetation across it. It also includes 3,000 feet
of pavers and 470 feet lineal feet of railing that will help the roof keep the peak of 60-80 degrees. It reflects the approaches that the
rest of the world is attempting to have against the need for electricity and produce more oxygen into our air.
Globally, we have recognized that global warming is a problem and we are trying to stop it in any way we can. In this article, (http://
www.pbs.org/newshour/extra/features/july-dec06/kyoto_11-15.html) you can see how through things like the Kyoto Protocol the
nations are trying to come together and reduce the emissions so our temperatures don’t rise too much. The United States is one of
the main countries responsible for the protocol as well as enforcing it so you can see how it is affecting even our city.

5. Science and Technology
The city of Philadelphia is one of the founding members of this country. Everything
was started here including the first pieces of innovation such as electricity
concentration as well as things like the fire union and other things. It is no shock that
we have one of the main pieces of science and technology founded here, The Franklin
Institute. You can see in the picture the sign for the Cleopatra exhibit that is coming
from across the globe to this museum in which the public will be able to see for a
small fee.
This museum is the quid essential essence of science throughout the world. They
exemplify the major artifacts and explore the human body through things like body
worlds. People from around the globe come here to see the exhibits and to innovate
the way we think. Recently the Franklin Institute has opened exhibits (http://
www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/the-franklin-institute-launches-two-new-
exhibits--changing-earth-and-electricity-saturday-march-27-89060417.html) that have
to do with the global impact that our emissions are having. This global coming
together of information represents globalization well.

6. Economy
Along with the history that goes along with this city, we have one of the
major Mints in the entire country. This building is home to millions of
dollars that helps to keep our economy moving. The problem is that, the
people whom consume the money are the people that control how our
economy moves not the place that the money comes out of.
We have been the center of commerce ever since we were the capitol of
the United States back in 1792 and the Coinage Act was put into place
making it mandatory that we had a Mint. Our economy and the things
that we do with this money affects the rest of the world dramatically.
We can tell by the most recent Economy drop how the rest of the world
was affected (http://www.voxeu.org/index.php?q=node/3421) that we
have invested ourselves pretty deeply into the rest of the world. Not only
that though, but this Mint has global effects solely for the use of the
dollar. Money is shipped all over the world for people trying to convert
dollars or even just using them because the Dollar is so strong. Our
globalized economy and the money we have / use effects people
everywhere.

7. Trade
You see in the picture here, as has been probably seen in several of the other
projects, a tee shirt tag claiming where it had been made. This one in particular
was manufactured in Mexico and sent here. Hundreds of tee shirts are created
in other countries and sent to the Americas and places around the world the
world looking for cheap tee shirts.
As you can see in this article (http://www.marketresearch.com/product/
display.asp?productid=1495105) , the amount of imports that we have been given
in the past has grown significantly in the past ten years from places like Mexico
and China because we have sent a majority of our things across the sea to
different countries. The imports that we have invest up more into this
‘globalized’ market that the 21st has brought our country too.

8. Health
The 21st century has brought a sense of awareness to what is
going on around the world. The Internet and computers in general
have brought information that once may have been inconsumable
to the peoples that were not there to see something that was
going on. As we are brought to this new day in age and things like
disease and hunger radiate throughout countries we need people
who use their time and efforts to help them, this is where the Red
Cross comes in.
The Red Cross is a foundation that has taken up the task of
bringing aid to peoples whom need it. Whether it be in the United
States or is places like Haiti, they are there trying to get people to
a stable environment. According to this article (http://
newsroom.redcross.org/2010/01/12/disaster-alert-earthquake-in-
haiti ) , you can see the help that the Red Cross has done for the
people that suffered horrible effects due to the earthquake in
Haiti.
Right in our backyard there are one of these centers for the Red
Cross. People can come, volunteer or possibly donate money to
the foundation to help all over. This brings a piece of the world
health to Philadelphia and cities all over the country where there
are these centers.

9. Education
Here is a general picture of the Community College of
Philadelphia. People can come here in all age groups to receive an
associate’s degree in the area of their choosing. It’s hard to tell
from this picture, but people of all different races come to this
area, especially those attempting to learn English. They can come
here and take remedial English classes in order to learn the
language.
This theme can be tied back to immigration because people from
different countries come here to start new lives and get a better
education then the one they may have had in the country before
this one. In this article (http://www.cis.org/articles/2007/
back1007.html ) it talks about how in some respect people that
immigrated here/ their kids are much more likely to graduate
from college then the American’s that were already living here.
This building emulates the global environment that comes here
for an education.

10. Development
One of the largest groups of people that can be found in our city is the people of China Town. They came many years ago to the city and
started a little culture that has developed into a spot all their own in Philadelphia. You can see through the picture the bridge that is like a
barrier from the rest of the city to this area that they have made their home. Even the American traditions/sanctions that we have such as
the fire company has been modified to this culture to show whom they are and what they are doing.
This article (http://www.pshrink.com/chinadopt/How_Much_Culture.html) talks about the amount of Chinese culture that has been
brought to America in the recent decades. The impact that different cultures are having on our society is what is bringing up the
phenomenon that we hundreds of years of society could potentially look brown and with similar features because we are all going to be
conjoining.

11. Society and Culture
For this picture a church seemed appropriate! One may be reconsidering this picture as something that does not represent our culture well at all
but this one seemed appropriate. It is a church near 4th and race that is something of an ambition in the world of religion. It was founded by a
couple of Germans in the 1700s when it may not have been too appropriate for them to be here. From then on, they have been a church that has
accepted all peoples for who they are and that they want to do with their lives. This includes, but is not limited to, gays, Hispanics, and anyone that
is interested in becoming religious.
This follows the rest of the world in our attempt to accept every race and every person for who they are. We are a generation that comes with
thousands of new ideals coming forth that cannot be stopped. This article (http://www.gracecentered.com/extremes_in_churches_of_Christ.html)
talks about how for the longest time Catholics and Christians have been prejudice across the world but have recently been more accepting due
to circumstances that are the culture around us.
