You have to : Know your audience / target Uncover their real needs & expectations Understand how (& where) they want to use your product Know the basic usability principles (guidance, error prevention, terminology, homogeneity, design, etc.) Test early & test often, with real users
How ?  Meet your end users  Observe & ask specific questions Analyze how they work & benchmark with competitors Set clear goals (conversion) Involve real users  in the design phase (participative design) Start with a prototype Test quickly, early in the process Plan user tests sessions (2) before it’s too late Measure & improve
Eye-tracking (method)  A specific user test configuration (not the only method!) Pro’s :  Automated objective data (time, clicks, eye-fixations, etc.) Visualize in real time what the user is looking at Generates “sexy” visual outputs (eye-gaze, heat maps & graphs)  Con’s Require a (costly) eye-tracker Test configuration may take more time Impossible to do remote testing
