Abstract
CEO.
all'Innovazione.
L'aspetto tempo non è da sottovalutare!
Come ricordava Roberto Pelosi in apertura i tempi di sviluppo si riducono in modo
esponenziale, mentre crescono sempre esponenzialmente le nuove necessità.
• Innovative culture across the company
• Innovation cannot be ordered in a department or a process
• Encouragement
• No punishment for failure
• Know your brains
• Understand the Innovation cycles and aspects
• Riferimento organizzativo aziendale integrato all‘interno dell‘organizzazione
dell‘innovazione all‘interno dell‘azienda

Abstract
While in Italy there are very few companies where there is a Chief Innovation Officer with
this precise definition in the Job Title, this does not mean that there is no Innovation.
Indeed!
We discussed about this specific issue during the Round Table held July the 7th, 2010,
organized by CRIT and Alma Graduate School, in which we dealt with the themes of
Innovation viewed from multiple perspectives: companies operating in B2B and B2C
markets and firms that do consulting, who intervened with their Technical Directors and HR.
We started with a sort of axiom: Innovation is the courage to do something different that
can be monetized.
We faced during our discussion mainly Product Innovation, but the same reasoning focused
on this aspect also apply to the Process Innovation.
What emerged so strong and unconditional is that people who act as Innovators (with
several and varied job qualifications) must have technical skills, but should primarily be able
to create and manage Transversal Processes that cross through the technical
departments and the companies thoroughly.
6. They must have great capacity for involvement, great communication skills inwards and
outwards, excellent leadership skills and strong and unconditional support from top
management.
It's natural that differences in product type (complexity and technology involved), the
portfolio amplitude (with the different stages of each product life cycle), target customer and
market segments ... mean that in this discussion about the CIO there are so many
differences and aspects to be kept under consideration.
All intervened companies share the presence of a corporate strategy far beyond the short-
term results: strategic plans for medium-long term highlighting the true aims and methods of
sharing benefits among all people, both internal and external, that contributed to those
achievement.
Communication and information transfer play a dominant role in this scenario: the
innovations in Information Technology and Web 2.0 platforms can be a useful support,
without confusing the means with the target.
Forum and "open discussion" with any kind of censorship (absolutely not hierarchical) are
a good basis to start an "Idea Management" processes .
The Open Company concept extends the innovative contributions to all those who live the
company, even outside the physical boundaries, managing in this way a knowledge transfer
with great technological contamination. Therefore suppliers as well as customers,
universities and research institutes, acquisitions, training schools, network structure (MIT
Medialab, CRIT, etc ...) come into play together with the Company itself.
Giancarlo Micheletti intervention covered all these aspects, which were also articulated in
different ways by subsequent speakers.
The most important concept is that Innovation (Product's one) is one of corporate values,
across the entire enterprise, recognized and encouraged and supported by the CEO.
As Alessandra Vizzi told us, Innovation in Indesit is a creation experience "under the gun”,
and the innovation metrics ensure not only good innovation going forward, but that all
people who have contributed to it get their proper recognition. The stimulus for people, who
play a central and essential role, can come from MBO and patents awards.
Even in the Marketing Team is essential that there is a person who is totally dedicated to
innovation.
The time aspect is not to be underestimated!
As Roberto Pelosi pointed out in his opening, development time is being reduced
exponentially, while new market needs grow exponentially as well.
The most complicated thing is to get a "Foresight" (which starts at the governance level to
reach the corporate one) which should allow us to understand and anticipate the emerging
technologies trends.
7. On the other hand we must not lose heart, because in each crisis there is at least one
opportunity as philosophers and Eastern cultures teach us.
We absolutely must prepare now people to the jobs that will come tomorrow ... and the
challenges these new jobs will bring with them.
The organization becomes one of the Foresight pillars.
We can not host innovation within a casual corporate structure.
Innovation must be part of the work of everyone in the company, a value that must be
recognized, rewarded and protected.
And that's why we went with an other HR Directors to investigate this aspect.
Marcella Gubitosa laid out the paradigms of this belief:
• Innovative culture across the company
• Innovation cannot be ordered in a department or a process
• Encouragement
• No punishment for failure
• Know your brains
• Understand the Innovation cycles and aspects
Once again the company values are steeped in Innovation and Quality, with
organization models and approaches that in TetraPak differs from to those one seen and is
much closer to those of large U.S. corporations.
In such environment a small group of 9 persons, within the HR Strategy & Planning, guide
the whole Carton Value business area.
The importance of NOT having quick delivery and to grow and develop innovative talents
that can make their contribution.
Finally, an interesting comparison between Innovation in Industrial vs Consulting
companies illustrated by Davide Capponi, which ended in a synthetic chart with the
differences in the role of Chief Innovation Officer in the two types of organization:
Industrial Consulting
• The CIO is Manager of a dedicated structure • The CIO is manager of Temporary Team
and has his own labs and infrastructure aggregated on a specific opportunity
• Human and financial resources defined • The resources are defined and dedicated to
availability of support on a project-base
• Scouting of market needs within the company • Scouting of customers needs through market
• Company Reference person for future units
technologies • Playmaker of the innovation process within
• Reference organizational business processes the organization
integrated operating company • Entertainer of a virtual community of
innovation within the company
8. Together with the interesting our guests speeches, we had some participants' interventions
that stimulated discussions and analysis of some specific issues.
Here are some reflections launched:
• Not only technological innovation but also managerial one
• We should find the same courage to do things in different ways, especially if those
things are difficult, as innovators had in the last century
• Which is the cultural journey to become CIO? And what KPIs to measure and optimize
his performance?
• In our company, Finnish property and only 100 employees, in order to promote
innovation we have developed technological Roadmap and modular platforms
architecture.
