SENATOR'S RESPONSE LETTER TO MAYOR CARLISLE TO VOICE CONCERN FOR
KAILUA LANDFILL SITE SELECTION
April 20, 2012
Mayor Peter Carlisle
Honolulu Hale
530 S. King St.
Honolulu, HI 96813
Aloha Mayor Carlisle,
I am quite concerned about the news that has come out today regarding your Advisory Committee on Landfill Site
Selection ranking Ameron Hawaii quarry at Kapaa in Kailua as the top site under consideration for the new city landfill.
I respectfully request a full outline of the selection process used in compiling the initial list as well as subsequent pared
down versions, culminating in today’s disclosure. I would specifically like to understand how 3 out of the 11 final sites
are from in and around the Kailua community, especially considering to federally recognized conservation districts and
bordering wetland preserves. Please share the selection criteria and how each criterion was weighted. Additionally,
please note whether or not dry, low lying and/or industrial areas were duly considered throughout the exploratory
process.
I do not believe the community will be in support of this site for the next landfill. Environmental impact will be a most
important issue in this consideration.
Mahalo and Aloha,
Senator Pohai Ryan
