  • Remind colleagues that they need to be logged in to Google Drive with their apsva.us account to access files.
  • Khan Academy.com is a mastery based personalized online learning resource that was started by Salman Khan in 2006. The site produces micro lectures on a variety of topics ranging from history to mathematics. As it specifically relates to mathematics, the topics range from basic addition to calculus.

  • It also provides teachers, parents and coaches with the ability to track mathematics skills data, provide acceleration and remediation, and supplement in-class mathematics instruction.

The Khan Academy team has produced over 100K practice problems and made them available to users, and these problems have been accessed over 7 million times since the inception of the site. The problems are written by a team of math teachers, tutors and professors.

According to research by SRI International, as of February 2014, the KA site is visited by 10 million people every month.

  • KA can be used as a supplement to your classroom instruction. This chart shows suggested ways that KA can be implemented in a mathematics setting.
  • Once you select log in, enter your username and password given to you for the purpose of this PD session on the right side of the dialog box. Once you log-in, you should see a pop up box asking you to agree to the TOS and privacy policy. Check the box and click on the green start learning box.

You’ll be asked to select an avatar. Students can unlock and further customize their avatars once they accumulate points by completing their tasks assigned by you and KA.

  • -Discuss welcome screen.
*Students CAN select a subject area, but it is not required--coach can recommend a mission. For the purposes of today’s training, we won’t select one right away.

-Let’s take a look at the user profile, and then add a coach. Click your name and then select Profile from the drop down box.
  • -Mention badges/gamification
-Mention programs, tie in with STEM.

    Add a coach
  • Once you click on coaches, you should notice a section on the left side that will allow you to add a coach. For the purposes of this training, enter the code you see here to join our class. Once you’ve completed this, you’ll notice that a coach was added to the right side of the page. Once you’ve successfully added a coach, go back to the homepage.
  • Once you’ve returned to the homepage, take a look here. This is the notification icon--this is where students will be able to find new recommendations from you. Click on the notification, and start the mission. For this training, we’ll be taking a look at the 8th grade math mission.

We’ll give you about 5-10 minutes to explore the mission and look around the site. The mission does start with a short pre-assessment in order to determine the individual student’s needs. Once the pre-assessment is complete, it shows the areas where the student needs practice, as well as any badges and points earned.

Take some time to check out the videos and the practice problems.

(halfway through, show coaches’ screen and real time data.)
  • Let’s set up your teacher account!
