2. Sight Vocabulary
Sight vocabulary is the bank of words that a reader
recognizes automatically, pronounces correctly, and
knows the meaning of in context.
Sight vocabulary acquisition is an important building
block in the construction of a child’s ability to read.
There are several techniques that we can use to
teach sight words:
3. Teaching Sight Words with
Pictures
Children learn more effectively when they visualize
things. This is done to help solidify the information
in our memories. Presenting children with
illustrations of sight words with their ‘text versions’
helps them make important connection between
the object and the word. (e.g., flashcards, posters,
etc.)
4. Listening to and Saying Sight
Words
This technique pertains to the process of practice/
repetition. Pointing to a word while repeating is
greatly helpful and effective in making explicit
connections between the word and its sound.
Repetitive reading of texts helps children to commit
these words to their long term memory.
5. Sight Words in Context
When children see words used in natural ways
rather than in isolation, they are more likely to
remember them because they develop an
understanding of the word’s significance and
meaning.
