Soccer was first codified in 1848 at Cambridge University with the laws of the game still used today. A regulation soccer field is between 100 and 110 meters long and 64 to 75 meters wide. Soccer is played between two teams of 11 players each who can position themselves on the field in different formations, most commonly using a 4-4-2 setup with four defenders, four midfielders and two strikers, with the objective being to outscore the opposing team by kicking the ball into their goal.
