agree with its position. Good persuasive writing has
certain special features. The topic sentence in a
persuasive paragraph clearly states an opinion. The
supporting information should consist of the best
evidence in support of the opinion. In addition, because
you are seeking to change minds, you should carefully
consider effect on your audience of your choice of words.
7. DESCRIPTIVE WRITING
Descriptive writing re-creates
sense impressions:
sights, sounds, smells and tastes.
It uses language to capture a
dominant impression or mood.
The topic sentence of a
descriptive paragraph should
present a general, or dominant
impression of whatever you have
chosen to describe. The topic
sentence should focus on the
reader’s attention on a specific
person, place, object, or
experience. It should not be either
a statement that calls for a factual
explanation or an opinion that
must be backed up with reasons.
8. NARRATIVE WRITING – The purpose of a narrative
writing is to tell a story, true or fictional, usually to
entertain. A topic sentence for a narrative paragraph
should present a general truth or set the scene and
prepare the reader for the events to follow. A topic
sentence can be especially effective at the beginning
or the end of a narrative paragraph. At the
beginning, the topic sentence can arouse curiosity
and focus the reader’s thoughts. A topic sentence at
the end of a paragraph can function as a humorous or
serious conclusion.
