Bancroft Annual Report 2012
1.
2. Our Mission
Bancroft’s mission is to ensure that every person is given
opportunities for lifelong learning and fulfillment. We
do this by altering perceptions, and by supporting those
with intellectual and developmental challenges and
acquired brain injuries in achieving their life goals as
valued and respected members of our world.
You move us forward
Two-thousand employees. Nine major sites. Almost 200 group homes and apartments.
Bancroft is clearly a large organization.
But we’re also a place where one person can make a huge difference.
It’s certainly true of our employees, who do amazing work every day. And it’s also true of our
donors. People like Ray Welsh. The Farley family. Betty Moran. Each of these donors has
shown extraordinary support for our mission – and lives have been transformed as a result.
Since the launch of our most ambitious fundraising effort – Transforming Our World |
The Campaign for Bancroft – many supporters, both old and new, have stepped forward
to give at all levels.
Momentum is really building! We are well on our way to achieving our goal for the
Campaign, which is already increasing opportunities for the children and adults we support.
This Annual Report will show you some of that momentum, the exciting transformations
already occurring, and the great places we’re headed with your help.
Please remember, every contribution truly makes a difference – and brings us closer to
One World. For Everyone.
On behalf of each person and family we serve, thank you for your support!
TONI PERGOLIN, PRESIDENT, CHIEF EXECUTIVE

3. At Bancroft, we help people do the things that
are most meaningful to them and their families.
Big things, like going to school, holding a job,
and participating in the community. Important
things – from communicating to reducing their
problem behaviors. Joyful things, like playing a
sport, taking a trip, or socializing with friends.
Brain Injury Rehabilitation –
Day and Residential Services
2
I’m a different person since
coming to Bancroft. I’ve
worked toward independence
and achieved my goal of
living on the outside.
– Duane Wong, age 33
”
Brain Injury Rehabilitation – Veterans
Assisted Living Pilot Program
Since surviving a brain injury
at age 14, Carolyn has come
a long way with Bancroft’s
support. Today, she does office
work five days a week, and
arranges her own transportation
to her job and her many
leisure activities.
“
We’re so thrilled with
Bancroft and how Ross
has done here.
”
– Laura Kuntz, mother of Ross
Mikalauskas, age 20
Lindens Behavioral Stabilization
Program, Education Program,
Autism Residential Services
Bancroft helped Ross overcome severe
behavior problems related to his autism,
which prevented learning and many other
activities. Today, Ross goes to school,
volunteers, and lives in the community
with Bancroft’s support.
After his brain injury, Navy veteran Duane
Wong struggled with a range of issues. Today,
he’s living and volunteering in the community,
and improving his walking, memory and other
abilities with Bancroft’s help.
A.J. and teacher Cassie DiOrio
”
– Carolyn Musser, age 41
Carolyn and her sister Kim
Each day, our work is as varied as the children
and adults we support. But we always have one
goal: to enable those we serve to participate
as fully as possible in our world – one world,
for everyone.
Your donations
enable us to increase
opportunities and
alter perceptions.
Even the people
we support and
their families are
sometimes surprised
by how much they
can learn, grow and
accomplish! They’re
grateful, and so
are we.
“
Duane and physical therapist Lois Burke
Every day, we prove that
it’s our world, too
“
I’ve achieved things
I never thought
possible.
“
We’ve seen a huge
difference in A.J. He’s
happier, he’s walking,
he’s talking a bit.
”
– Kristi Gonzales, mother of
A.J., age 2
Little Butterflies Daycare
Program
Bancroft staff members taught A.J.
sign language and other skills to
compensate for his developmental
delays. Today, A.J. communicates
what he wants, is less frustrated
and more receptive to learning.

4. Transforming Our World:
Update on the Campaign
We launched Transforming Our World | The Campaign for
Bancroft in 2010 to transform the lives of the children and adults
we support and strengthen Bancroft for the future. This $6 million
Campaign is enabling Bancroft to modernize our facilities, increase
our technological abilities, and respond to emerging needs.
The Transforming Our World campaign has already had a major
impact on people’s lives, thanks to the generous support of more
than 70 donors* listed at right.
The Campaign is close to reaching its $6 million goal by its
June 30, 2013, deadline. That will enable many other critical
improvements which are not funded through any other means.
This is an exciting and transformative time, and we are pleased to
recognize these generous contributors who have thus far made
pledges and cash gifts to the campaign.
Thank you to our Campaign Donors*

5. Together, at Bancroft,
we are transforming lives
“
With support from donors like you, the Campaign for Bancroft has
already enabled us to:
”
• Rebuild the Bancroft Lakeside Campus at Mullica Hill
(formerly the Mullica Hill Campus), to better meet people’s
needs and increase their independence.
• Provide more SmartBoards and iPads, which are helping
our students learn.
• Provide more communication tools and assistive devices,
which open up the world to those we support.
Please join us in reaching our $6 million goal – and ensuring better
lives for thousands of people with disabilities, now and in the future.
6
My love of Bancroft came about because
of my dear friends Ray and Joanne Welsh,
whose son was at Bancroft. I’m very
impressed with the care that Bancroft gives
to people, and how dedicated the staff is.
It’s also very important to have modern
facilities for people who really need them.
– Betty Moran, who has given generously over the past three years
to the Campaign for Bancroft.
“
My family and I support
Bancroft so it can continue
for Ryan and his friends.
Ryan’s getting an excellent
quality of life at Bancroft.
– Robert Farley, shown with son Ryan,
who has been with Bancroft since 1997
and now resides at the Bancroft Lakeside
Campus at Mullica Hill. The Farley family,
including both sets of grandparents, gives
generously to Bancroft.
”
“
We give because of our great regard and
respect for the work Bancroft does and for
the people whom it serves. And we give in
memory of our son Randy, who had a very
fulfilling life thanks to Bancroft.
”
– Raymond Welsh, shown with his wife Joanne.
The Welshes have provided major financial support to
Bancroft for more than 20 years.

6. Your donation makes a
challenge a possibility
Bancroft offers many
giving options to fit
our supporters’ needs
and interests. Whether
a one-time gift or a
donation spread over
time, each contribution
enhances the lives of
many hundreds of
people with disabilities.
You can support
Bancroft through
donations of cash,
stocks, mutual funds,
goods and services,
among other options.
Transforming Our World | The Campaign for Bancroft Our landmark
fundraising campaign is significantly improving the lives of those Bancroft supports.
For details, please see the Campaign Update on pages 4-7.
Margaret Bancroft Annual Fund This “unrestricted” fund enables Bancroft to
respond to emergent needs and opportunities.
Planned Giving Planned gifts can provide you with income and added tax benefits.
Options include remembering Bancroft in your will, naming Bancroft the beneficiary of
a retirement plan or life insurance policy, and creating a charitable annuity or trust.
Tributes Donors can honor or remember a friend or loved one by making a gift in
the person’s name. Bancroft will notify the person or his/her family of the gift.
Sports & Personal Fundraising You can support Bancroft when participating
in sports events or when celebrating a special occasion, through a special web page.
Details are at www.firstgiving.com/Bancroft.
Other Ways to Give You can donate through your employer’s United Way
campaign, by sending us grocery labels that we can redeem for donations, by
using free websites like GoodSearch, and by volunteering.
Bancroft’s
STAFF –
like the team shown here –
is passionate about
contributing, too!
Our Employee Impact Campaign
is growing, with 854 staff
members donating in
fiscal year 2012.
“Our staff will do anything for the children. We’re here to give them the best
education we can and the quality of life they deserve. Giving to Bancroft is just
another way our staff shows their dedication.”
– Colleen Rowan-Valentino, principal, The Bancroft School at Voorhees Pediatric Facility, pictured
with her staff. This group is always the first to reach 100% participation in Bancroft’s annual
Employee Impact Campaign.

7. Everyone deserves a chance
We vow to make that chance a reality
The Butterfly Ball, our signature fundraising event, provides vital annual
support for Bancroft programs. The Ball contributes almost a third of
our “unrestricted” donations, which can be used wherever they’re most
needed. The fall 2011 Ball set both fundraising and attendance records,
raising $340,000 and drawing 310 guests. Hosted by Phillies announcer
Tom McCarthy, the event featured a novel addition: guests made extra
donations by text message, adding 9% to the fundraising total.
Our Golf Outing also provides major support for Bancroft programs.
Like the Ball, it raises “unrestricted” donations, which address unfunded
needs like facility improvements, assistive technology and extracurricular
activities. Limited to 72 golfers, the spring 2012 event raised $66,000
through registration fees, donations and corporate sponsorships.
Four cultivation events throughout the year helped us connect with
donors and meet their friends and contacts – resulting in significant
additional support. Held in various venues, these gatherings ranged
from a wine-tasting with football legend Dick Vermeil to a reception
and insider tour at Citizens Bank Park. By making these personal
connections, we also alter perceptions in the community.
Special events provide
lively opportunities to
support Bancroft’s mission.
During the 2011-2012
fiscal year, both our
annual Butterfly Ball and
Golf Outing had their
most successful events. In
addition, several “cultivation
events” drew potential
and existing supporters,
creating new bonds and
strengthening older ties.
OUR 2012 GOLF OUTING at Jasna Polana in
Princeton – a great cause and a great course!
THE ANNUAL BUTTERFLY BALL – our
black-tie gala that touches the heart.
SOME OF THE ‘FRIENDS OF BANCROFT’ –
an enthusiastic group of young supporters
who volunteer and host fundraising events.

13. Building momentum
toward our future
We accomplished so much this year: The reconstruction of our Lakeside Campus at Mullica
Hill. Huge gains in our students’ use of technology. Early success in our most ambitious
fundraising campaign – which is already transforming lives.
As this momentum grows, we pledge to continue meeting challenges, increasing
opportunities and altering perceptions.
With your support in fiscal year 2012-2013, we will:
• Take the next steps toward modernizing our 120-year-old, flagship
Haddonfield Campus.
• Continue opening more high-quality group homes.
• Further expand access to iPads, SmartBoards and other technology for those
we support.
• Increase our in-home supports – such as Bancroft At Home – to bring our
services directly to families who need them.
Through all of these efforts and more, Bancroft will continue toward our vision of becoming
the region’s elite service-provider for people with autism, acquired brain injuries and
other intellectual or developmental disabilities.
More in-home supports
will offer help and
guidance in all aspects
of life to more people.
22
Modernizing our main
campus in Haddonfield will
maximize our students’
learning and growth.
More group homes – like this one for adults with
brain injuries – will mean better lives for many.
More technology resources will help “level
the playing field” for more children and
adults with disabilities.

Our organization is the best it’s ever been. Bancroft is truly poised for greatness in the years ahead.
The demand for the services Bancroft provides continues to rise. One in every 88 children born
today will be affected by autism, compared to one of every 150 children just 12 years ago. Medical
technology has improved survival rates from traumatic brain injury and other neurologic anomalies
– including combat injuries sustained by military personnel – resulting in more individuals who
require the services that Bancroft offers. Over three million Americans are challenged with
disabilities from a traumatic brain injury.

Over the past year, Bancroft has achieved a number of significant accomplishments. From
rebuilding our Lakeside Campus at Mullica Hill, to continuing our Lindens program for young
people with severe behavioral challenges, all of us, working together, have made our successes
possible. I am grateful to our outstanding staff, strong management team, passionate supporters,
and my dedicated colleagues on Bancroft’s Board of Trustees.
