- INTRO: Hi, I am Christopher Bishop, work in IBM CHQ providing strategic comms support for executives in CCCA, IBM has been actively exploring the use of virtual worlds for over three years, since our Chairman, SJP appeared in Nov 2006 in SL while speaking to a group in China. I have been an active member of IBM’s VUC for over 3 years I have designed, developed and executed many, many events in virtual worlds using a range of environments. Very excited about the prospect of using these spaces to create more immersive experiences – more cinematic or theatrical –using particles and scripted objects Invited three friends to help me out who are already exploiting these capabilities Many people are apprehensive about how the value of these environments I think all metaverse evangelists owe a debt of gratitude to James Cameron for his recent movie *Avatar*. It certainly helped to clarify some of the concepts we have been talking about for the past few years
- QUESTIONS: to determine level of knowledge and awareness How many people have spent time in SL? How many have either attended or produced events in SL? How many know what particles are? Scripted objects? Context: all technology was once new Today: Internet access, smart boards, computers, CD-ROMS… primitive, asynchronous (mostly), solitary, minimal interactivity, collaboration, force-fitting old models into new technologies – kids are plying video games and using immersive technologies to form teams, execute missions, review effectiveness of teaming, choices about resources, techniques – this is how they can be reached in terms of teaching as well. Do you think a kid will be more interested in learning by reading text or viewing video on a DVD rather than being in an immersive environment? (this may all be a given…) Leverage the manipulation of scale, creation of phantasmagoric objects impossible in the real world Benjamin Franklin quote - “Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn.” That is the key to this discussion for me Canadian Border Patrol – case study Same reaction to electricity, autos, radio, talking pictures, telephone, Internet, wireless, virtual worlds Adjunct not supplant Slowly being adopted – education and training are where the early wins are I have invited four innovators have graciously agreed to share their work with all of you –master scripter/designer, professional negotiator, health and wellness executive My OBJECTIVE : Show you what people are doing in this space – how they are creating one act plays, mini-movies, theatrical environments that allow much ,more impactful education, training, orientation, collaboration Keep these in mind for your own work as you develop content to share with globally distributed students, clients, teams, peers Let’s keep in touch – please contact me for any advice All of these gentlemen are available for consultations to show you in more detail what they are doing and how you might apply these kinds of thinking and approaches to your work as you develop your own innovative educational materials, courseware.
- Initially it was enough just to be in-world – amazing to be in a 3D space People used models from the RL and transposed them into virtual spaces – PPT slides, streaming media, narrated slides or video Even bots Wonderful tools: 3D Post-It notes BrainBoard Opinionator
- But it is now time to explore the next level of interactivity in virtual worlds – an approach I call “cinema virtua” This approach requires quite sophisticated skills – it is complex code to write – and also requires people who can think in a more theatrical, cinematic way, creating storylines, more like one act plays, soliloquies
- Four innovators Greg Cook – master coder, designer, scripter in San Diego Mark Jankowski – lawyer, entrepreneur and principle at Virtual Training Partners in Baltimore Claus Nehmzow and Peter Mills – a mgmt consultant and a practicing physician, founders of HealthyWorlds – Claus is in Hong Kong, Peter lives in London but is in Chicago at the moment

- Mark is a “recovering” lawyer (his words!) Moved away from Webinars because of the lack of interaction He is currently running training sessions for a company with offices in Australia, Austria, Toronto… Uses changes of costume of his avatar as an integral part of his approach

- Tremendous potential to innovate in this space – we are in the nascent stages – looking to you to lead and be creative Look at your current processes for teaching and see where there might be room to incorporate 3D models and objects that people can interact with Think of your classroom setting as a play, a scenario, a theatrical event, a one act play that you want people to participate in and feel immersed in How could you take them and enhance using a more theatrical approach Think of your classes as one act plays or short subjects What could you make into 3D that would REALLY create impact? Design it – build it – use it! Tell us about what you are doing! – blog about it, share it on Twitter, LinkedIn communities, Facebook, Plaxo The key take-aways from today are that certainly virtual worlds are a perfect place to conduct training and educational settings for geographically dispersed teams – but they also allow for the creation of objects and scenarios that simply can NOT be created or presented in any other forum. The fact that you can replicate reality is not the point – rather, the fact that you can manipulate scale, create things that don’t exist in the real world, change personas and clothing and appearance to better make a point or share a teachable moment or show someone what your talking about – represent complex concepts in a 3D way to make them easier to understand Crating a 100 foot tall molecule 3D process model you can fly thru VGDC demo of virtualization Travel car that gives you a tour of a space
