Unlocking the CeLLS

 1. 1. Unlocking the CeLLS
This work is licencedunder a Creative Commons Licence except where explicitly exempted.
UK Centre for Bioscience logo © University of Leeds. 3. 3. CeLLS project
Collaborative e-Learning in the Life Sciences
JISC/SFC Transformation project, 2005-2007
http://www.jisc.ac.uk/whatwedo/programmes/elearningsfc/cells.aspx
Produced a significant number of high quality learning resources
Uploaded to Jorum as per project requirements
Held under Jorum Institutional Licence
Not appropriate for our OER collection
4. 4. CeLLS Preservation Society
One of our DCs discovered the CeLLS resources hosted in Jorum
Discussion at: http://heabiowiki.leeds.ac.uk/oerbital/index.php/Molecular_biology
Impressed by their descriptions* and flagged up for potential inclusion in OeRBITAL collection but unable to access
Initial investigation revealed original steering committee member sat in next office(!), who was able to offer contact details
Cunning plan formed to seek to re-release resources under Creative Commons
5. 5. Justification
Project originally funded by JISC
Designed to be used by HE
Ethos of project v.similar to OER, from final project rep and final sustainability plans:
Designed for reuse and adaption, for collaboration across sector for further development of resources
6. 6. Working with the IPR Support Team
Needed advice on most appropriate course of action
Number of v.useful exchanges with Naomi C
Suggest caution, solid risk management approach, exhaust all reasonable avenues
Clear documentation trail
Good trial for IPR Risk Mgmnt Calculator
http://www.web2rights.com/OERIPRSupport/risk-management-calculator/
Low - medium
V.useful advice offered for initial contact email
7. 7. Following the trail
Project website no longer live
Most of original project team either retired, part of organisations that no longer exist (Interactive University) or have moved to new institutions
Trail 4 yrs (c)old
8. 8. Following the trail cont.
Project managed overall by JISC, funded by SFC, managed by Dundee University initially, but transferred later to Napier:
http://learning.covcollege.ac.uk/content/Jorum/MET_Enzyme-inhibition_LM-1.2/special_ack.htm
Institutions involved
Scottish Colleges Biotechnology Consortium
Napier University
University of Dundee
Interactive University
Scottish Qualifications Authority
All released material
9. 9. Following the IPR trail cont.
SFC did not choose to retain copyright
From investigation, IPR appears to remain with the individual institutions that released the resources, so potentially would have to go to each to request re-release
10. 10. Encouraging signs
All original project members and funding/management bodies able to be contacted have strongly endorsed the move
(Unconfirmed, but…) no third-party material included in resources – project policy
Dundee looking at reviewing its licensing policy for material in Jorum, and Creative Commons looks to be a front-runner
Have offered input on this
Member of our Advisory Board is Dean of L&T in relevant dept at Dundee
Have now managed to obtain project documentation on:
IPR Management Policy
IPR Operational Guide
Investigation is ongoing…
11. 11. Classification as Orphan Works
Last resort
Doesn’t seem appropriate currently, based on the contact we’ve now made and what we’ve uncovered so far
Although, given that the Interactive University has now closed down, something to consider…though further investigation req’d
