3. The genus name Hyacinthus was attributed to Joseph Pitton de Tournefort by Carl Linnaeus.
It is derived from a Greek name,
the flowers supposedly having grown up from the blood of a youth of this name accidentally
killed by the god Apollo.
4. Hyacinth was formerly the type genus of the separate family Hyacinthaceae;
prior to that the genus was placed in the lily family Liliaceae.The color of the
hyacinth is red, yellow, pink, white and blue, the blue hyacinth flowers varies
between violet blue and bluish purple.
