1. TCO 8 is referenced in this graded discussion as it applies to
how social influences in-group settings may cause individuals
to behave in unusual ways. Hazing and sports riots are examples
in which group dynamics cause the individual's normal self-
control to be temporarily set aside.
A good starting point for the discussion is hazing. Let's begin
with the controversial 2003 Glenbrook North High School
hazing incident. This high school, located in an upscale Chicago
suburb, made the national news and the Oprah show.
Do a bit of research. What happened at Glenbrook North High
School?
a)
9. 2. This discussion references TCO 5 as it applies to stereotypes,
prejudice, and discrimination. Some relevance to TCO 3 is also
implied with respect to the sense of social self, self-concept,
and self-esteem.
We will approach the subject by observing that being the target
of discrimination can be a life-altering experience for someone
in a target group. Access to housing accommodations is an area
of American social life in which discrimination on the basis of
race and ethnicity continues, even if not legally.
What must it feel like to sense that you are being excluded from
renting an apartment because you are a member of a visible
minority?
a)
3. We normally think of the arts as very different from
technologies in spite of the fact that art (with perhaps a few
exceptions) is practiced with the help of technology. This
practice creates interdependence between technology and art. To
what extent does art respond to, or is shaped by, the technology
that enables it? To what extent have advanced and accessible
digital technologies, such as websites, digital photography, and
YouTube, changed the relationship between art and
technology? Are these technologies reshaping our attitudes
toward artists?
a)
4. With the introduction of computer-generated animated films
(CGI), there has been much discussion of the impact on the
movie industry. For example, illustrators need to have different
10. skill sets. Have story lines and musical scores changed in these
films? What impact does the emphasis on special effects have
on plot and character development?
a)
5. In Career Focus: A Personal Job Search
Guide, Martucci Lamarre (2006) suggests that if we want to
realize our job dreams, we need to think about ourselves
as products to be marketed, and in order to do this, we need to
contextualize ourselves within the five Ps of marketing:
product, price, place, presentation, and promotion (p. 4). Please
reflect and respond to the following questions taken from our
textbook.
· What exactly is your product and how is it different from (or
better than) other similar products?
· Where will you sell your product?
· Who are the potential buyers of the product and how does that
price compare to similar products being offered?
· How will you let others know about your product, and how
will you develop its presentation to appropriate markets?
