1) The document discusses potential challenges the world may face in the next 20 years like climate change, pollution, loss of biodiversity and natural disasters if issues are not addressed properly.
2) Some challenges mentioned include increased pollution, loss of fish species, destruction of ecosystems, water scarcity, drought, landslides and increased disease outbreaks.
3) The document proposes solutions like encouraging afforestation, sustainable farming practices, alternative energy sources, regulated fishing, family planning and disaster preparedness to work towards a smart, sustainable and inclusive future.
[Challenge:Future] Towards smart, sustainable and inclusive Future
1. “Towards smart, sustainable and inclusive Future”
Facing 21st century disasters.
Participants are encouraged to envision potential disasters that we can face in the next 20 years and
create solutions for the prevention, preparednessr response to what humankind may face for example
climate change,terrolism or natural disasters.

There are many challenges the world is facing and is likely to face in the 20 years time if such
challenges are not properly addressed and these include . climate change and natural disasters.
Climate is a very important factor in determining the way people live. it affects the social, economic
and cultural aspects of life. In developing countries, lide deeply depends on climate such that any
disruptions in its patterns brings about changes which are in most cases negative.
If man;s ativities are not revised we are likely to face the challenge below.
Increased atmospheric pollution with all its effects on human life, plants and animals such as black
rains, skin cancer and eye catalacts.and we expect to se an increased number o blind people n a 20 years
time.
The current rate at which people are fishing with the poor methods of using poisonas wellas poor fishing
gear will see so many regions with no fish spicies left or will lead to loss and extinction of some fish
spicies in 20 years time .Acase in point is Tilapia which has started disappearing in Uganda;s lake
Victoria which is the second biggest frsh water body in the world next to Cnada’s Ontario.
Destruction of the ecosystem which will lead to disappearance of so many plant and animal spicies
thereby affecting the food chain.
2. Areas with poor water supply will become worse and those near rivers will experience flooding which
will lead to destruction of heir property. More hospital beds will be occupied by people suffering from
water related diseases. The cost of providng clean water will have tripled.
Increased droughts due to scarcity and unreliable rainfall this will result in insufficient and lack of
pasture for grazing animals and food crops will dry up.
We shall witness and see the desert extending to other regions as well as less vegetation cover due the
poor land use methods .
There will be an increase in the los of forest vegetation resources due to population pressure on land
resources and in 20 years time the population will have doubled it also contribute to Green house gases.
There is also a fear that ozone depletion will lead to cooling of the layer which may alter global wind
patterns thereby changing the weather.
Many diseases related to poor feeding, flooding, high temperatures, air pollution will be rumpant. This will
increae the budgets of several countries particularly Africa .
Famine and malnutrition will increase in the next 20 years .Food prices will have doubled, food will
therefore not be enough for the then population as littlefood will also be grown and other crops will be
destroyed by the drought and floods.
There will be increased migrations of different animal, bird and humans due to natural disasters like
earthquakes ,land slides andflods.
Now that so many farmers are using artificial fertilizers, like CAN,NPK we expect the soil to have lost its
fertility in a 20 years time. Remember thse fertilizers also pollute water bodies when it rains and they
also interfere with the soil living organisms.
We expect to see more landslides and earthquakes with all the associated problemsof destruction to
people s lives and property.
We expect more snow caps in Europe and USA in the 20 years time. This will continue to affect the
communication, tourism and transport sectors in such regions. When visibility is not ok due to snow
,then the aviation Industry is affected .
More wetlands and forests will have been cleared for settlement, Industrialisation or urbanization.
SOLUTIONS TO THE ABOVE CHALLENGES
If we are to have a sustainable future in the 20 year time ,then ;
The re is need to encourage the public to carry out agroforestry, afforestration re-afforestration and
conservation of forests so as to preserve habitats for for birds and animals as well as cut down
emissions.
3. People should be told that forests help in the formation of rainfall, provision of shade ,sourse of food in
form o fruits which cures difficiency diseases such as scavey for fruits rich in vitamins.
The public should be encouraged to use organic fertilizers and well as manage the wate properly by
using the 4Rs i.e. Reuse,Recycle,Reduce ,Replace.
There is need to sensitize the educational institutions and start up live clubs like Environment
club, wildlife club,Climate change club for students to practically study and be involved in such issues
.The methods of fishing need to be revised and if possible restricted fishing should be implemented.Poor
fishing methods should be banned.
We need to train people on the uses of forests and the values of wetlands –they should know that
“wetlands are not wastelands”
Encourage people to use better farming methods like crop rotation, mixed cropping, agroforestry
,mulching, contour ploughing which discourage soil erosion.
The governme shoul educate the public on food storage techniques, drought resistant crops, post
harvesting skills as well as solutions to such disasters and their cause.
Governemnts should set strict laws on bush burning as well as implement the policies
There is need for the government to put in place regulations against projects that which about the
adverse effect of climate hange. Then an Envionmental Impact assessment should be carried out before
any project is established.
Governments should encourage people to practice family planning and produce a few children for a
sustainable future.
People should e encouraged to wear sun glasses and hats to prevent the direct sun radiation from
reaching them.
More researchers should be trained in thefield of climate change and natural disasters as well as crop
and animal diseases which emerge as a result of Climate change.
Governemnts should think of better options fuel other than firewood to cutdown e air pollution as well
as save the planet’s forests.
Each country should have an active and facilitated/equipped body /unit in chrge of such disasters such
as climate change, natural disasters then we shall be assured of of a smart, sustainable and inclusive
future.
