DON’T MAKE
RAPID CHANGES
Trying to form many new habits at
once leads to failure.
It’s a mistake to try to form new patterns of, for
example, writing, boxing, controlling your diet, and
weightlifting all at once. It’s overwhelming.

Try to
establish
only one new
habit at a
time.
Start with the most
important one first; in
this case, writing. Then,
when it starts to feel
automatic, you can start
developing another one.

Knowing your motivations and writing them
down is important to help you keep going when
you feel discouraged or face stumbling blocks.

this pattern, it will lead
you to write
automatically, and will
eventually become a habit.

Having support can help kick-start your writing.

SUPPORT
It can come from friends or family. You can
ask them to hold you accountable.

Fear of
punishment
sometimes
can be a
powerful
motivator.
While your friends likely
won’t hit you or take your
privileges away, just having
to admit that you have
procrastinated or failed to
reach a goal may be
punishment enough!
Supposing you don’t
complete your writing
tasks, they will administer
some kind of punishment.

When you start your day by doing your most
important task, it will give you a sense of
accomplishment, and you will want to maintain
this momentum the whole day.

Wake up and feel tired? Not in the mood to
write? Someone has annoyed you?

These are not valid excuses to give yourself a pass.

PROCESS FUN
Find ways to make it fun.
If you’ve been writing only at home, maybe it’s
time to try taking your laptop on the road. You
could also work while drinking coffee or tea.

It’s hard to form a writing habit if you also
check emails, read blogs or surf the Internet
while you’re writing.

ELIMINATE
DISTRACTIONS

You can
eliminate
these
distractions by
writing out in
advance things
that normally
distract you.
Some of these distractions
can be completely ignored
or addressed later.
This tip will not only help
you form a habit but will
help you get more done.

Some beginning writers set goals of
thousands of words daily.

SET REALISTIC
GOALS

Shooting so high
can paralyze
them and lead
them to
procrastinate.
If you’ve never been able
to write 1,000 words a
day, don’t set a goal to
write 2,000. Set goals
that are ambitious- but
also realistic.

Don’t be overwhelmed by obsessing
about whether or not you will
successfully form a writing habit.

FOCUS ON THE
PROGRESS

Concentrate
on what’s in
front of you
- writing -–
one small
step at a
time.
Once you have built
the writing habit, you
will realize that it’s
easier than you
initially thought.

Setting a goal of writing five hours a
day is daunting.

SET A MINIMUM
TIME DURATION

if you’re just
starting out,
set a minimum
time for writing
at least 30-60
minutes a day.
This is more doable
and will increase your
confidence. You can
scale up once you feel
comfortable with it.

You need to track your progress if
you want to get motivated.

TRACK YOUR
PROGRESS

The metric
that you have
to track is
the number of
days that
you’ve been
writing.
For example, if I set a
goal to write at least 60
minutes a day for 30
days, I would check the
mark on my calendar
each day I accomplish
this goal until the 30t h .

Forming new habits takes time – maybe
even months. But if you implement these
tips for even one month, you may be on your
way to developing a strong writing habit.

Writing can be
