2. Battle of Camden
• South Carolina militia was not prepared for
battle.
• They turned and ran away from the British
forces.
• Major defeat for the Continental Army
(Americans)
• Almost all of South Carolina was under the
control of the British.

4. Battle of King’s Mountain
• Considered the turning point of fighting in South
Carolina.
• British soldiers and the Loyalist militia were
attacked by mountain men from North and South
Carolina from behind rocks and trees.
• Many British were killed and injured.
• The British tried to surrender, but the Americans
refused to accept it (or offer them quarter) because
of how badly Americans had been treated by the
British.

6. Battle of Cowpens
• After the Battle of Camden, the militia had a
reputation for running away from a fight.
• Andrew Pickens used this to his advantage.
• Pickens partisan forces attacked the British and
then ran off the field of battle.
• The British chased them.
• The partisans led the British into the guns of the
waiting American army.
• The British were defeated and left South Carolina.
