15 th Century - Known as the Great Pox, Known as the French disease by the English and the English disease by the French, Known as the Italian disease by the Spanish and the Spanish disease by the Italian 16 th Century- 10% of all deaths were the result of syphilis in France 20 th Century - 1909 - Ehrlich developed the first cure for Syphilis an agent called (Salvarsan 606) an arsenic derivative. 1940 - Fleming invented Penicillin 21 st Century – Sees new rise in syphilis due to the rise in HIV and lower resistance rates. ( Ferguson, 2005)
The causative agents for Syphilis are Spirochaetes, Treponema pallidum, mostly human pathogens. Treponemes use the carbohydrates from the human body for the energy source. They are fully dependant on their host for food. They can’t synthesize their own fuel. This spirochete first appeared in the form of syphilis in the late fifteenth century, and is capable of infecting all body tissues. It is slow and painless process of taking over the host, invading all areas of the human body (Peate, 2007). It has often been called the great imitator because the pathogen symptoms look similar to other pathogens (CDC, 2008) Avoidance of disease producing micro-organisms by health education and use of barriers, condoms. Host Man is the only known host for syphilis (Klausner, 2006). Syphilis can invade the body through direct contact of the syphilitic lesions. This is usually accomplished during sexual contact. The organism can also cross the placenta in pregnant hosts. There have also been rare reports of nurses receiving syphilis through a needle stick if the injured area came in contact with a syphilitic lesion (Peate, 2007). Prevention by sex education and pre-sexual testing. Environment and health practices play a large role in the transmission of syphilis. The new rise in syphilis cases can be linked to area where there are men who have sex with men. The high rates are also linked to the rise in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) (Ferguson,2006). Genital lesions come into contact with areas on the body that have a tendency to lacerate easily. These areas are the genitalia and anus of both males and females. The transference of syphilis can occur by having vaginal, anal, or oral sex with someone who has syphilis.
