"Description:
Ethanolamines (EA for short), consisting of monoethanolamine (MEA), diethanolamine (DEA) and triethanolamine (TEA), are widely used as raw materials for agrochemicals, surfactant, medicine, polyurethane, etc. China is a large consumer of EA, but its output is far from meeting its domestic demand, which leads to China's heavy dependence on import. Although China's EA capacity reached 97,000t/a in 2008, its total output was only 48,600 tonnes, mainly due to soaring price of raw materials in H1 and falling demand in H2 caused by financial crisis. In 2008, China consumed about 173,957 tonnes of EA, of which 125,721 tonnes or 72.3% was imported.
At present, many existing manufacturers are planning to expand capacity and some new manufacturers will engage in EA production. After the launch of all these new projects, China’s total EA capacity will be four to five times as much as the current scale.
Apart from the production situation, this report also provides answers to the key questions as follows.
Where are the major origins of these imported EA and who are the active importers? Will the dependence on import change in the future, as China’s manufacturers have been expanding their cacity?
Global financial crisis has influenced the production of EA in 2008, as well as the development of downstream industries. Will the financial crisis continue to exert impact on China's EA industry? Is it likely to maintain rapid growth in the coming years under present economy recession?
The tight supply of ethylene oxide (EO) has been a key factor restricting the production of China’s EA producers, which results in price fluctuation of EA. Will such situation continue in the future?
To promote the development of China’s EA industry, Ministry of Commerce of the People’s Republic of China began to levy antidumping duty with rate of 9%~74% on EA from some countries and regions. How does the antidumping duty impact China’s EA industry? What is the trend of the price of EA before and after the antidumping?
At present, in what fields are EA consumed in China? What is the future trend of EA price?
You can also figure out the breakdown of drivers and barriers of China's EA industry, as well as forecast on EA development in China in 2009~2013.

Executive summary:
- Production situation
Since 2000, domestic EA industry has developed rapidly with CAGR of XXXX% in 2000-2008. As of
June 2009, there have been XXXX active EA producers in China, with their total capacity of XXXX. In
2008, the total output was only XXXX tonnes, mainly due to soaring price of raw materials in H1 and
falling demand in H2 caused by financial crisis.
Among XXXX active producers, XXXX enterprises produce MEA, DEA and TEA, and XXXX only
produce TEA with their capacity of XXXX currently. Only XXXX consumes its own EA.
Owning to EO supply shortage, operating rate of EA industry has been almost at a low level in recent
years, around XXXX, except 2007 when it soared to XXXX driven by soaring demand from glyphosate.

All the domestic EA manufacturers use EO as raw material.
- Import & Export situation
China is a large consumer of EA, while domestic supply of EA can’t meet the demand, and large
quantities of EA need to be imported. The market share of imported EA always maintained over XXXX
in recent years except 2007. The import quantity of EA has kept increasing in 2000-2008 with CAGR of
XXXX reaching XXXX tonnes in 2008.
In 2008, Malaysia, Taiwan and Japan has maintained their leading positions as China's top 3 import
origins, with total import volume of XXXX tonnes from these regions, accounting for XXXX of China’s
total import.
Compared with the import quantity of EA, the export quantity of EA in China is relatively small, which
has been less than XXXX from 2000 to 2008.
- Consumption situation
In China, EA are mainly consumed in the following fields including agrochemicals surfactant, medicine,
gas purification, polyurethane, metal cleaning, and textile and rubber ingredients and so on.
Agrochemical industry is the largest consumer of EA in China, which consumed about XXXX tonnes of
EA in 2008, accounting for XXXX of total EA consumption in China.
EA consumption in China has grown rapidly in the past few years with CAGR of XXXX in 2000-2008
thanks to rapid development of economy and its downstream industries. While owning to global
financial crisis, China consumed about XXXX tonnes of EA in 2008, only up XXXX year on year.
- Forecast
Though current domestic capacity of EA is small compared with some countries and can’t meet the
demand in the future, it is predicted that the capacity will continue growing rapidly in the coming years.
Moreover, the operating rate of EA currently in many companies is low, but it will increase step by step
in the coming several years. It is estimated that EA output will reach about XXXX tonnes in 2013 with a
CAGR of nearly XXXX, and the self-sufficiency rate will be XXXX in 2013.
