Slavery had a devastating impact on African American families by separating husbands and wives who were often sold to different places. After slavery, many African American men migrated or escaped to find work but were far from their families. This led to a decline in intact African American family structures. Into the 1960s and 1970s, a shortage of eligible African American men developed due to lack of jobs and high incarceration rates, contributing to growing numbers of fatherless homes. While progress has been made since the Civil Rights Movement, statistics still show more single African American mothers than in other groups, with many children growing up without fathers physically or emotionally present in the home. There is hope that African American children's education and home environments will continue improving
