OBJECTIVES
I will be able to:
Use long a letter patterns to read unfamiliar words.
Sort words by word sound.
Explain my ideas in a group discussion.
Let’s take out our Word Sort Chart from our AVID Binder to
review the different letter patterns that can make the long a
sound (review letter patterns)
Remember, looking at these patters can help you to sound out
unfamiliar words. Let’s take a look at the following sentence:
From deep in the woods came the wound of neighing.
(TE page 24)
Today we are going to read “Saving Yellowstone.” As
you read highlight words with the long a sound and
circle words with the short a sound. After you
finish, we will work together to complete the Word
Sort Chart.
Let’s create another Word Sort Chart like the one
we created in Lesson 8. Let’s review the words we
underlined and cirecle and see where, and if, they
fit in the Word Sort Chart.

Grade 4 Unit 1 Word Study Lesson

  • 1. Grade 4, Unit 1, Mini-Lesson 11 (15-20 min.) Word Study
  • 2. OBJECTIVES I will be able to: Use long a letter patterns to read unfamiliar words. Sort words by word sound. Explain my ideas in a group discussion.
  • 3. Let’s take out our Word Sort Chart from our AVID Binder to review the different letter patterns that can make the long a sound (review letter patterns) Remember, looking at these patters can help you to sound out unfamiliar words. Let’s take a look at the following sentence: From deep in the woods came the wound of neighing. (TE page 24)
  • 4. Today we are going to read “Saving Yellowstone.” As you read highlight words with the long a sound and circle words with the short a sound. After you finish, we will work together to complete the Word Sort Chart.
  • 5. Let’s create another Word Sort Chart like the one we created in Lesson 8. Let’s review the words we underlined and cirecle and see where, and if, they fit in the Word Sort Chart. (TE p. 24)
  • 6. (TE p. 25) How did the action taken by the government in “Saving Yellowstone” affect people’s lives?
  • 7. How was this similar to and differnet from the government actions described in “Solving Problems”?
  • 8. How did the knowledge of the long a and the short a sounds help you sound out unfamiliar words?
  • 9. Let’s now work together to fill out the Week 1 Spelling Practice sheet. Let’s look at each word carefully. We’ll also use context clues to see where ouir words fit.
