Holistic therapeutic educational center casa angelman

  1. 1. Holistic Therapeutic Educational Center Casa AngelmanThe working methodology of our Therapeutic Educational Center is based on Art Therapy and usesother psychotherapeutic devices to conform an holistic educational system. Art therapy is basedon the creative process and uses all artistic forms in order to recover and rehabilitate individualswith physical, mental, behavioral and emotional disorders. Art Therapy uses art as the first andmost important way of communication. These expressive artistic forms can be repeated as much as necessary until the child becomesaware of what he can and cannot do, so that the team can subsequently help them developmotor, emotional and cognitive abilities that will generate a feeling of self-satisfaction, surenessand independence, and consequently attain a more productive and positive activity. The principal goal of art therapy is to revalue the subjective aspect of the person, giving him thechance to exercise his personal capacities attending at the same time his health. In this way, arttherapy sees the disease as a peculiar characteristic of the person. The educational process and the therapies included will be designed considering the needs of eachchild. The therapies recommended for this first group are:  Music therapy  Swimming  Physical education  Active meditation with Tibetan singing bowls and on screen images.  Yoga  Equinotherapy  Reflexology  Corporal Expression  Organic Orchard  OsteopathyObjetives:  Behavioral, sensorial and attitudinal self organization.  Motor abilities to increase self esteem and sureness.  Pragmatic creative thinking (problem solution).  Non verbal expression.
  2. 2.  Sensitivity. Feeling, observing and reacting to objects and circumstances that surround them.  Emotional regulation in relation to the environmental variables.  Recognition of the other self.  Acceptance of frustration, as a way of opening to new creative processes and learning.  Improve social skills.  Group work.METHODOLOGYSpecific concepts that will be attained:  Hyperactivity: we can see an overflow of energy and anxiety children behavior. We will help them channel this energy, working with their sense of balance and organizing their day to day activities so that they can feel and think their actions. Children will have to walk through a circuit every day. This circuit is design so that they can work their balance, their observation of actions and their ability to focus on something.  Attention spam: we will create activities that help them extend their attention spam, aware of their actual level of development. We will do it using day to day actions, such as washing dishes, watering plants, eating slowly, etc.  Communication: we believe anxiety is partly a consequence of their inability to communicate their desires and emotions. We will help them firstly by giving them a sense of what yes and no mean, and as from here empowering them by understanding their natural needs. We will also work their facial muscles, so that they can transmit desires and emotions with whatever sound they can create.  Physical development: children with the syndrome have a difficult relation with their bodies. They have limited control of it, and are not encouraged to stimulate it in most cases. But our view is that contact with the body will give them sureness, trust, and independence. This is why we are intensely focused in physical work.  Cognitive-emotional work: due to their condition, these children are usually overprotected and indulged. They naturally develop a behavior that has no limits. This makes therapeutic work hard and slow. We believe a way of loving our children is by treating them with discipline, showing them the limits our society has, and putting them in a same level of individual. This includes having a strong link with parents, so that educational work is integrated with home work. We will have weekly meetings with parents to share information about their children and their evolution.
  3. 3.  Spiritual growth: we believe our children condition has something to say in this world. We will use art to show community what they can create and express, at the same time giving our children the chance to develop spiritually. We are willing to share this educational experience with every single person or institution that isworking with Angelman Syndrome or similar conditions with love and enthusiasm. We are focusedon creating the best system for the development of our special children. We believe this is done byuniting the scientific and therapeutic community.
