This assignment is based on the website by Eleadah Clack and Frewini Haile called "Ladies of Hip Hop: Female Rhetoricians." (http://hiphoprhetorics.portfoliovillage.com). The assignment is used for the Black Women's Rhetoric Project (see http://blackwomenrhetproject.org) on the second day of students' study on rhetoric and black women in Hip Hop (unit seven). Haile and Clack are students in the class.
At their website, Haile and Clack describe black women's rhetoric "as a bold announcement of historical, social and personal consciousness. Through their words, actions and lived experiences, black women break down barriers, open doors and create change." Their website explores "the ways black women rhetors embody their words and create meanings beyond the barriers that they may have faced." Haile and Clack focus on hip-hop at their site "as a rhetorical form because of the impact of these women on [their] lives." They believe they've learned from Hip Hop women and intend to pay homage. The playlist that corresponds with this assignment features interviews and vlogs from both Haile and Clack as well as the perspectives of other women in Hip Hop today.
On this second day of unit seven, students have THREE playlists to choose from for your assignment (you can watch/listen to all three playlists but come to class ready to talk about ONE of the playlists). This is the THIRD playlist that features the thoughts and ideas of WOMEN AUDIENCES as full PARTICIPANTS of Hip Hop.

10. Quotes brought to you by Frewini&Eleadah…
And I figured out that the reason I couldn't get through the day as
well as I can now is because I had too many things on my mind, on
my plate, you know, for one person to have. So I started to eliminate
some of the things that were too heavy to carry and unnecessary.
~Erykah Badu
I want kids of this generation to see that everything is cool, that
there's some kind of unity in hip-hop. We all found something that's
really important to us, and music is all we've really got. ~Missy

I don't need anybody to market or promote me. If people don't want
to hear this music, then it's not for them. You cannot please
everybody. ~ Lauryn Hill
