I work at Madison College in the school of dental hygiene. My project is titled “The Gleason Guide”. I choose to make an instructional video to help students master the skill of instrument sharpening using a self-directed learning approach.
Grows self-directed learning stages;
Student is dependent and lacking self-direction, teacher centered.
Student becomes interested and confident, teacher is guide.
Student is involved, engaged, self-directed, teacher is facilitator
Student is able to plan and execute, teacher is mentor
On page 75, Costa sets the criteria for self-directed learning assessment, that it should be self-managing, monitoring, and modifying. The students will have access to this video through Bb. The goal is to create the following.
1. Self-managing; thoughtful plans and initiates actions, produces knowledge by experimentation, uses clear and precious language.
2. Self-monitoring; evaluates, corrects and adjust to work to improve quality of work.
3. Self-modifying; reflects and learns from experience
What I learned;
1. The video itself was a complicated process that required involvement with Madison College and outside sources.
Self directed learning requires A LOT of time, organization and paying attention to detail.
2. The process and product had little room for error. This explains why the students struggle with the competency.
3. Non dental people were working on this project, so there was a number of edits that occurred with the voiceover (pronunciation) and the video itself. But I think it ended up with clear direction.
4. The goal is to produce a sharp instrument, I believe the video will meet this goal for our students.
5. Understand that new concepts are difficult for students, especially when possible negative outcomes may result; needing to purchase new instruments.
