2. Glossary
• SNOW - Frozen precipitation in the form of white or translucent ice
crystals in complex branched hexagonal form. It most often falls
from stratiform clouds. It usually appears clustered into snowflakes.
• RAIN - Precipitation in the form of liquid water droplets greater than 0.5
mm. If widely scattered, the drop size may be smaller.
• HAIL - Precipitation that originates in convective clouds, in the form of
balls or irregular pieces of ice, which comes in different shapes and sizes.
Hail is considered to have a diameter of 5 millimetre or more.
• LIGHTNING - A sudden and visible discharge of electricity produced in
response to the build up of electrical potential between cloud and ground,
between clouds, within a single cloud, or between a cloud and
surrounding air.
3. Predicting
In your book make some predictions
• What is the wettest time of the year?
• What is the driest time of the year?
• What is the hottest time of the year?
• What is the coolest time of the year?
4. Checking
• Use the information provided on the sheet to
check your assumptions.
5. Weather Instruments
• In groups we are going to design weather
instruments to measure different elements of
the weather.
• In your table group, brainstorm ideas.
What will you measure?
What will you need to make it?
How does it measure the element?
