Are you experiencing unexplained itching, jaundice, dark urine or light stools? You may have elevated
liver enzymes. This condition can be caused by such things as too much alcohol consumption, hepatitis,
cholangitis, cirrhosis, diabetes or obesity.
You may also have a buildup of toxins that you come into contact with every day from practically
everything that you consume or touch. There are generally two specific enzymes that are elevated.
These are the alanine transaminase (ALT) and the aspartate transaminase (AST).
Elevated liver enzymes may also indicate damage to or inflammation of your liver.

disease or illness. In most cases, the liver enzymes are only temporarily or mildly elevated so until you

If the ALT levels are higher than it is may be a sign of liver diseases such as hepatitis. If the AST levels are
higher, that may be a sign of alcoholic liver disease. In any case, your doctor will want to do more testing
to see what is causing the elevation.
There are several things not necessary related to the liver, or not even diseases at all, that can cause
your liver enzymes to be elevated. Some of these include excessive use of some herbal supplements
such as kava kava, comfrey, pennyroyal, or skullcap.
Gallstones will also cause an elevated test as will medications such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory
drugs (NSAIDS), thyroid problems, antibiotics, seizure medications or cholesterol medications. Until you
know the exact cause of your elevated liver enzymes, you won’t know what the best way to treat it is.
Treatment for Elevated Liver Enzymes
Treatment is entirely dependent upon what is causing the elevation and some of them are obvious. If
obesity is causing the elevation, you will have to lose weight. If you are damaging your liver with alcohol,
your doctor will tell you to stop drinking. There may be a problem if it is medication causing the
elevation, particularly if it is medicine that you are dependent upon to live such as a seizure medication.
