Grenada AgriTourism Policy Setting Workshop : Lotten Haagman " Challenges and opportunities in sourcing local produce for the hospitality sector"

  1. 1. LOCAL PRODUCE CHALLANGES AND OPPORTUNITIES FOR THE HOSPITALITY INDUSTRY
  2. 2. Grenada Hotel and Tourism Association  GHTA is a non-profit, non-governmental membership organization that promotes educational opportunities for the industry workers; assist with the development of cultural activities, aid in marketing, and lobbies and advocates on behalf of its members.  GHTA was instrumental in creating the PURE Grenada brand emphasizing on the importance of keeping Grenada green and clean. Preserving the amazing assets we have as a destination for travelers as well as the local population.  GHTA are the BSO for the new Flower Cluster who was approved by Compete Caribbean for technical support starting 2020.  What are our members looking for?
  3. 3. What tourist expects on a tropical island Fresh tropical fruits and vegetables. New flavors but safe and semi- known Imported fruits and vegetables Box juice
  4. 4. CHALLANGES  Consistency in getting the produce they need to complete the menu expected by guest that they serve.  Quality and quantity of the produce. Organic vs other. (Bigger resorts).  Variety available at various seasons.  Delivery daily/weekly to the south.  The demand for flowers is not met. Eatable flowers.  Keep in mind. About 2000 rooms vs other islands.  Sustainable and sensible visitors. Send visitors on their own to safely explore.
  5. 5. OPPORTUNITIES  Several hotels form partnerships with local farmers and fishermen.  WhatsApp groups exists between MNIB and farmers, same could be created for hotels as it seems like most farmers have access to WhatsApp.  An App (Alex) could be developed as a link between buyer and seller COMMUNICATION / WORKSHOPS  Ask hotels what they are importing and try to meet their demands?  Ask the farmers what they are growing and design menus from this info  Pay the farmers for their produce so that it make sense to the younger generations to farm.  Important to be on the same page for investments purposes to be successful.
