Hinweis der Redaktion
How livelihoods of farmers and locals be improved through data and data enabled innovations?
58% of global food production is from family farms
Digitalisation can be part of the solution
Weather data- In Sudan, thanks to SMS-based advisory services, farm productivity increased by 300% with improved water efficiency (CTA, 2015)
Price data - Esoko market pricing SMS service revealed that farmers received a 10% price increase for their respective crops (Subervie, 2011) Ghana
Extension data In Mali, yields have increased on average by 1 ton/ha thanks to RiceAdvice (among 600 farmers)
Red: stress
Green: no problems
Possibility for real time action taking on weed infestation, pests and diseases
True-colour representation (top) and the respective 3D model visualisation (bottom) of images acquired from a UAV platform over cropland (Mbuyuni area, Tanzania, June 2015).
A lot of good examples
in finance (M&E, money transfer, access to), insurance
info on markets (output and input), marketing platforms, supply of production, prices, traders and quality.
Production, extension, soil, water, wheather
But also infor on members, their capacity, governance, finances. And on production, water, soil and extension.
Evidence for policy influence
But, what photo also shows is that, there are more important general effects.
I would like to make three extra points.
More general effects on old paradigms and inclusion
How to upscale
Conditions/ lessons learnt
Digitalisering laat toe aloude paradigma’s over gaps te overkomen: gender, ontwikkelde vs. niet ontwikkelde wereld (Afrika was ons voor wat mobile banking etc. betreft), agro-ecologie/high tech moderne landbouw, private, non private etc.
We know there remain gaps for inclusion (access, digital literacy) but exclusion less along the type of actor, model. On the contrary, youth is attracted. More efficiency, targeting, information for everybody.
