Chuig: Údaráis Bhainistíochta Scoileanna Dara Leibhéal
Athruithe ar Riar na Marcanna don Bhéaltriail Ghaeilge
sna Scrúduithe Teistiméireachta
Déanaim tagairt do na hathruithe suntasacha ar riar na marcanna atá le bronnadh ar an
mbéaltriail Ghaeilge i scrúduithe an Teastais Shóisearaigh agus na hArdteistiméireachta le
héifeacht ó 2010 agus 2012 faoi seach a d’fhógair an tAire Oideachais agus Eolaíochta le
déanaí.
Méadófar na marcanna don bhéaltriail ag an Ardleibhéal agus ag an nGnáthleibhéal i scrúdú na
hArdteistiméireachta ó 25% go dtí 40%. Laghdófar na marcanna don chluastuiscint go dtí 10%
ag an Ardleibhéal agus ag an nGnáthleibhéal araon agus bronnfar 50% de mhóriomlán na
marcanna ar na páipéir scríofa.
Ag an mBonnleibhéal i scrúdú na hArdteistiméireachta, méadófar na marcanna don bhéaltriail
Ghaeilge ó 25% go dtí 40%. Laghdófar na marcanna don chluastuiscint ó 30% go dtí 20%,
agus bronnfar 40% de na marcanna ar an bpáipéar scríofa.
Maidir leis an Ardteistiméireacht Fheidhmeach, méadófar na marcanna don bhéaltriail Ghaeilge
ó 33% go dtí 40%. Laghdófar na marcanna don chluastuiscint ó 30% go dtí 25%, agus
bronnfar 35% de na marcanna ar an bpáipéar scríofa. Sa chás go ndéanann scoláirí an
I gcás bhéaltriail an Teastais
Shóisearaigh, déanfar na marcanna a dhúbailt ó 20% go dtí 40%. Laghdófar na marcanna don
chluastuiscint go dtí 10% agus bronnfar 50% de na marcanna ar an bpáipéar/na páipéir scríofa.
Sa chás nach reáchtáltar béaltriail ar bith, bronnfar na marcanna ar bhonn an pháipéir/na
bpáipéar scríofa agus na cluastuisceana amháin.
Tá achoimre ar an méid sin le léamh sna Táblaí atá ceangailte.
Tiocfaidh an scéim mharcála nua i bhfeidhm do scoláirí a bheidh ag clárú sa chéad
bhliain in oideachas dara leibhéal i mí Mheán Fómhair 2007 agus beidh feidhm leis dóibh
siúd a dhéanfaidh scrúdú an Teastais Shóisearaigh ó 2010 amach, agus dóibh siúd a
dhéanfaidh scrúdú na hArdteistiméireachta ó 2012 amach.
An aidhm atá leis an méadú ar na marcanna sa mheasúnú ar an mbéaltriail ná athrú béime
suntasach i leith na Gaeilge mar theanga labhartha a chur chun cinn, a chuirfidh ar chumas na
scoláirí cumarsáid agus caidreamh a dhéanamh astu féin agus faoina mbeidh an Ghaeilge á
labhairt gach lá i scoileanna. Ceapadh an méadú ar na marcanna don bhéaltriail roghnach mar
chuid de scrúdú an Teastais Shóisearaigh ó 20% go dtí 40% ó 2010 amach mar spreagadh do
bhreis scoileanna an rogha seo a chur ar fáil. Á chur san áireamh a thábhachtaí is atá
cumas labhartha i bhfoghlaim teanga, tá na scoileanna ar fad á spreagadh chun leas a
bhaint as an rogha seo sa Teastas Sóisearach. Tá na sonraí maidir leis na socruithe
reatha don bhéaltriail roghnach sa Teastas Sóisearach le fáil in Imlitir S81/06 agus
S82/06 ag www.examinations.ie
Forbairt Ghairmiúil
Déanfar infheistíocht i gcláir um fhorbairt ghairmiúil agus i soláthar ábhar acmhainní mar thaca
leis na hathruithe. Tá maoiniú breise curtha ar fáil don Chomhairle Um Oideachas Gaeltachta
agus Gaelscolaíochta ar mhaithe le hábhair a fhorbairt, agus cuirfear deiseanna feabhsaithe ar
fáil do mhúinteoirí ar mhaithe le forbairt ghairmiúil faoin tseirbhís tacaíochta dara leibhéal don
Ghaeilge a cuireadh ar bun le déanaí. Rachaidh An tSeirbhís Tacaíochta i dteagmháil dhíreach
le scoileanna maidir le mionsonraí na socruithe seo.

Changes to the Proportion of Marks for Oral Irish in the
Certificate Examinations
I refer to the recent announcement by the Minister for Education and Science concerning
significant changes to the proportion of marks awarded for oral Irish in the Junior and
Leaving Certificate examinations respectively with effect from 2010 and 2012 respectively.
The marks for the oral examination at Higher and Ordinary levels in the Leaving Certificate
examination will be increased from 25% to 40%. Marks for the aural will be reduced to 10%
at both Higher and Ordinary levels, and 50% of the overall marks will be awarded for the
written papers.
At Foundation level in the Leaving Certificate examination, the marks for oral Irish will be
increased from 25% to 40%. Marks for the aural will be reduced from 30% to 20%, and the
written paper will attract 40% of the marks.
In the case of the Leaving Certificate Applied, the marks for oral Irish will be increased from
33% to 40%. Marks for the aural will be reduced from 30% to 25%, and 35% of the overall
marks will be awarded for the written paper. Where students take the oral examination in
the first year of their senior cycle programme, the changed marking arrangements will come
into effect in 2011.
The changes will also apply to the Junior Certificate where the oral Irish examination will
continue to be a school-based optional examination. In the case of the Junior Certificate
oral, the marks will be doubled from 20% to 40%. Marks for the aural will be reduced to
10%, and 50% of the marks will be awarded for the written paper(s). Where no oral
examination is held, marks are awarded on the basis of the written paper(s) and aural only.
The attached Table sets out the position in summary form
The new marking system will come into effect for students enrolling in first year in
second-level education in September 2007 and will apply to those taking the Junior
Certificate examination from 2010 onwards, and to those taking the Leaving
Certificate examination from 2012 onwards.
The intention of the increase in marks for oral assessment is to promote a significant shift in
emphasis towards Irish as a spoken language, where students can communicate and
interact in a spontaneous way, and where Irish is spoken every day in schools. The
increase in the marks for the optional oral component in the Junior Certificate from 20% to
40% from 2010 is intended to be an incentive for more schools to provide this option.
Given the critical importance of oral competence in language learning, all schools
are encouraged to avail of this option in the Junior Certificate. Details of the current
arrangements for the optional oral examination in the Junior Certificate are set out in
Circulars S81/06 and S82/06 at www.examinations.ie
In-career Professional Development
The changes will be supported by investment in professional development programmes and
provision of resource materials. Increased funds have been provided to An Chomhairle Um
Oideachas Gaeltachta agus Gaelscolaíochta for materials development, and enhanced
professional development opportunities will be provided for teachers by the recently
established support service for Irish at second level, An tSeirbhís Tacaíochta Gaeilge Dara
Leibhéal. Schools will be contacted directly by the An tSeirbhís Tacaíochta regarding the
detail of these arrangements.
