1. COVER STORY
20 The Pet in the Family
For Gwendolyn Coley
of Lanham, Maryland
and Gerard Johnson
of Boise, Idaho, the
animals in their lives
are important.
Coley was about
two-years-old
and living in
Columbus,
Georgia when
she saw “these
beautiful white
horses” pulling
the wagon carrying
John F. Kennedy’s
casket on television.
Today, she owns
three horses.
While growing up in
Milwaukee, Wisconsin,
Johnson’s dream was to
breed horses. However,
as a city boy he found
owning a horse impractical
and expensive; so, his
interest turned to dogs. He
is now one of the nation’s
top breeders of German
Shorthaired Pointers.
