Report on Parking Facilities at Murphy’s Supermarket, Ballyfoyle, Co. Wexford

 1. Terms of Reference
“As requested by the management of Murphy’s Supermarket, to investigate the
adequacy of the parking facilities at the supermarket and to make any necessary
      recommendations.”

 2. Methods of Procedure
2.1 Over the period of one week, cars parked in the car park were counted every
hour on the hour from 9am to 5pm (the opening hours of the supermarket).
2.2 During observations of the car park at peak periods, photographs were taken of
cars incorrectly parked and/or parking outside of the car park due to lack of
          available spaces.
2.2 Staff of Murphy’s Supermarket were consulted to ascertain the number of
          vehicles requiring parking facilities.
2.3 A meeting was held with staff, management and local residents to discuss
issues with regard to the car parking facilities.
2.4 Customers were surveyed to ascertain their level of satisfaction with the
          parking facilities available.
2.5 The area around the supermarket was mapped to identify possible ways of
          increasing the parking facilities.

  3. Findings
3.1 There is only one designated car park, containing 40 parking spaces in total.
3.2 There are only two parking spaces available for people or families with special
           needs.
3.3 30 staff members and up to 280 customers require parking every day.
3.4 Illegal parking is causing traffic congestion in the streets around the
           supermarket.
3.5 Local residents are unable to park outside their properties due to overflow
           from Murphy’s Supermarket car park.
3.6 There are no facilities for bicycles so cyclists park their bicycles in car parking
           spaces.
3.7 Some parking spaces are not properly utilised as just one motorcycle may be
           parked in it.

                                             38
3.8 Street parking on double yellow lines is frequent as the car park is often full to
     capacity.
3.9 Cars parked on double yellow lines cause traffic congestion on the streets
     around the supermarket.
3.10 There is a two acre plot of unused land, adjacent to the current car park. This
     belongs to a local businessman.

3.13.2 Customer satisfaction with current car parking facilities.
                                        41
4. Conclusions
4.1 The number of parking spaces available is inadequate for the number of staff
and customers who need parking. This problem is particularly prevalent at
peak times such as 3pm on weekdays and all day Saturday.
4.2 Families with special needs are often unable to find suitable parking and are
forced to park in spaces with insufficient space or in areas where there is a
threat to safety when loading and unloading their cars.
4.3 Some customers are parking on the street, taking up local residents’ parking
        spaces.
4.4 Some customers are double parking or parking on a double yellow line which
causes traffic problems in the area.
4.5 Some people are parking incorrectly, even when spaces are available, thus
reducing the amount of available spaces further.
4.6 Motorcyclists are taking up car parking spaces.
4.7 Bicycles are causing an obstruction in the supermarket car park.
4.8 The vacant plot of land could be used by the supermarket to extend their
        parking facilities.

5. Recommendations
5.1 The management of Murphy’s Supermarket should approach the owner of the
vacant plot of land, adjacent to the current car park, with a view to buying or
renting the land in order to extend the size of the car park.
5.2 Provide extra car parking spaces for staff and customers.
5.3 Reserve 5 parking spaces near the front entrance of the car park for families
        and people with special needs.
5.4 Hire a parking attendant to; ensure people are parking correctly in designated
spaces, direct customers to available parking during peak periods and to
ensure that customers who do not have special needs are not parking in special
        need designated spaces.
5.5 Owners of vehicles parked on double yellow lines should be written to by the
        management of the supermarket.
5.6 Consider clamping to discourage people from parking on double yellow lines
and in places that are designated for local residents.
5.7 Provide separate parking facilities for bicycles and motorcycles.

      Dear Sir/Madam,

I wish to make a complaint about a tracksuit I bought last month. It is an
      O’Neill’s tracksuit, order number 123456.

I washed the tracksuit according to the instructions on the label. When I took
the tracksuit out of the washing machine, it had shrunk and no longer fits me.

I have returned the tracksuit and I would like a refund. Please let me know
as soon as possible what you intend to do about this matter.

16.1 Internet Navigation
                                                                        Unit 16

Using an appropriate search engine, find:

  1. Information on a hobby/pastime

  2. Job opportunities in your vocational area

  3. Instructions on how to use PowerPoint

  4. Websites that contain information on a topic you will speak about in your oral
     presentation

Step 1: Firstly, click on the Internet icon. There are a number of Internet
           browsers available. These include:

           Internet Explorer

           Google Chrome

           Mozilla Firefox

Step 2: When you click on one of these icons, it will open a web browser. This is
a program which will allow you to view websites on the Internet.

              Here, the Google
              search engine
              appeared as it is the
              home page.

                                            89
Step 3: A search engine allows the user to search for information on the World
Wide Web. Google is probably the most popular search engine but there
          are others available.

If Google isn’t the home page, you need to type the Google website
address into the toolbar of the web browser you are using as shown
below and press Enter on the keyboard.

Step 4: To find information using the Google search engine, just type some
words into the search box and then press Google Search.

                                 Search box

                                       90
Step 5: As you can see, a menu containing terms related to the search may
          appear below the search box.

These are suggestions, linked to the word that was typed, which Google
thinks may help with the search. You can ignore the suggestions if you
want but you may find some of them useful.

Step 6: If you want to use one of the suggestions, simply choose it from the drop
down menu by clicking on it. If not, click on Google Search. You will be
provided with a page of results similar to that shown below.

                                        91
Step 7: Click on any of the results to open a website containing information on
your search words. Some websites may be more suitable than others.

Step 8: You are required to print information from a search that you have carried
out in class to demonstrate your competent use of Internet navigation.

Place the printed information in the appendix.

16.3 Setting up an Email Account Unit 16

Choose a webmail service and set up an email account.

Step 1: If you don’t have an email account, there are a number of popular
webmail services that are free to use such as:

           www.gmail.com
           www.hotmail.com
           www.mail.yahoo.com

Log on to one of these websites as you need to set up an email
account for the Level 5 Communications’ Module.

                                        94
Step 2: When you go to the website, click on the Create An Account button.
This will open up the sign-up form.

Step 3: During the sign-up process, you will be asked to supply personal
information. This process is put in place by the webmail service provider
in order to keep your account secure.

Below is a template of a sign-up form.

You should type in your information in the boxes provided.

           You can use
           numbers,
           letters and
           full stops
           only.

           Both capital Keep a written
           letters and reminder of your
           lower case email account details
letters can be like your chosen
           used. username and your
                                                          password as you
                                                          will be asked to type
                                                          these each time you
                                                          want to access your
                                                          messages.

                                        95
Step 4: You may also be asked to give some other information during the initial
sign-up process as shown below. Most of these fields are not required
pieces of information but it allows the user a degree of choice.

           Verification is a
           required element
           and one of the
           security features.

           Type these two
           pieces of text into
           the box provided
           in order to carry
           on with the sign-
           up process.

Step 5: Finally, you must tick the box to agree to the Terms of Service and the
provider’s privacy policy. If you fail to do this, you will be unable to
          continue.

                                        96
Step6: Once you have successfully signed up, you will receive a welcome
          message like the one below.

Step 7: Now you will be able to send and receive messages via the Internet.
Email is cheaper than a phone call and it is faster than regular post,
          often termed ‘snail mail’.

Step 8: Once you have created your email account, you can edit your
information through the Account Settings anytime you want by signing
in to your account and choosing this option in the menu.

However, once you have created your account, you cannot change your
          date of birth.

16.4 Sending an Email with an Attachment
                                                                     Unit 16

Send an email to your Communications’ teacher which includes a copy of your
Limerick or any personal writing piece from Unit 4.

Step 1: Sign in to your email account and select Compose Mail. Type the
teacher’s email address into the To box. Then type the subject of the
email as ‘Unit 4 – Limerick’ (or any piece of personal writing).

Step 2: This time you want to include an attachment in the email. Underneath
the Subject box, you will find the Attachment box. To add an
           attachment, click on Browse.

                                        98
Step 3: This brings up a new window with all the items from your desktop. Your
window might look somewhat different to the window shown below but it
          will contain similar information.

Step 4: Find the location of the document you want to attach to the email,
namely the Limerick from the unit on poetry. This should be located on
your USB key so click on Computer on the left-hand side of the screen.

                                       99
Step 5: From here, open the folder for your USB key and then click on the Level
5 Communications’ folder. Inside this folder, you should select your
Limerick (or any personal writing piece) and then press Open. Once this
is completed, a screen similar to the one below will appear.

                                                          You may have to
                                                          wait a few minutes
                                                          for the file to
                                                          upload, depending
                                                          on the size of the
                                                          file and the speed
                                                          of your Internet
                                                          connection.

Step 6: Finally, you should write an appropriate message to your
Communications’ teacher, explaining that there is a file attached and
          then send the email.

You will receive confirmation that your message was sent by way of a
          yellow pop-up box.
