2. Hit pause to read this.  To help everyone who’s using Pimsleur Russian we’ve typed out the text which matches the audio for Pimsleur Russian I – Lesson 5 from the Lesson 1-8 series. We also edited the audio by taking out all the English and reducing the longs gaps of silence. We feel it’s better to ‘echo’ the Russian, but feel free to hit pause so you have enough time to repeat the entire Russian phrase.

3. I also added some comments as I did this, and since I hadn’t ever listened to the audio before some of the Russian was very funny, especially after taking out the English, which emphasized just how ‘random’ some of the expressions are. I hope this helps you with your Russian learning but I would again recommend that you consider material other than Pimsleur if you want to speak Russian well and learn quickly.

The lack of flow and randomness of some expressions are really not effective. It’s like they’re trying to combine too many aspects into one audio. I’m still convinced that there’s a better way to do all this.

You can’t tell someone else “You understand Russian well.” You can say ‘you speak Russian well’ or even ‘you know Russian well’, but you have no way of judging their understanding of Russian, especially after just a few sentences.

147. Вы хотите... – You want хотите -тите хотите Вы хотите... (Narrator says “Say, ‘you want’.) Вы хотите... Now what’s the benefit of listening to the ‘narrator’ say in English, “Say, ‘you want’.”? And then a long gap of silence. The student is already repeating everything they hear in Russian and it’s not a ‘memory check’ since it’s just been introduced.

148. There’s no benefit. Just time ‘wasted’ and more conditioning for your mind to continue jumping back and forth from English to Russian instead of simply ‘knowing the idea’ in Russian directly with no need for translation. Next, asking the listener to say “I want” is also inappropriate. Now it is like a memory check, but the program hasn’t yet properly ‘made the memory’. It hasn’t yet ‘built up the neural connection’ through sufficient use and repetition. Asking for recall too quickly simply creates anxiety and stress. If the word is learned ‘naturally’ and completely, there’s almost no need for conscious memory of the word. You just know it. Asking questions too soon is a bit like stepping on wet cement. It makes a mess of it.

149. Я хочу (2х) There is a need to be able to understand a word or idea in ‘isolation’ when there’s no clear association or reference, but this is a more advanced skill that should be developed later. Я знаю. Я не знаю. Я не хочу (3х) Вы хотите... Вы не хотите... Вы не хотите... (2х)

159. Вы хотели бы... – Would you like…? хотели -тели хотели хотели бы (2х) Вы хотели бы... [you wanted would] (3х) I think it would have been helpful if the past tense form had already been introduced. Вы не хотите...

168. Не хотели бы вы что-нибудь поесть? – Wouldn’t you like something to eat? Now that’s a serious mouthful for a beginner! Especially since there’s insufficient training to get to this level. I still insist that learning short, informal expressions provides a better foundation on which to build. For example, a friend says to you: Хочешь кушать? Да, хочу. Спасибо. Anyway, continuing along with the audio.

173. поесть -есть (2х) по- поесть (2х) что-нибудь And it would be much better to have already learned the word ‘что’ (what) and then seeing it here provides immediate recognition and a strengthening of the neural connection. Learning ‘что-нибудь’ first is a bit like learning to go in reverse before learning to drive forward.

183. -будь -нибудь (2х) что что-нибудь (3х) что-нибудь поесть (2х) Не хотели бы вы … (3х) Не хотели бы вы что-нибудь поесть? (2х) It’s also a bit like learning to play an E7dim chord before you learn C, F and G.

186. They then make it confusing again by saying: “Now say, ‘You would like something to eat?’.” (as a question) Well, there is no such expression in English. It’s either: “Now say you would like something to eat.” to which the reply is “I would like something to eat.” Or, “Now say, “Would you like something to eat?”.” to which the reply in Russian is: Не хотели бы вы что-нибудь поесть? Oops!! My bad!! The Russian in the audio is: Вы хотели бы что-нибудь поесть.

187. They then make it confusing again by saying: “Now say, ‘You would like something to eat?’.” (as a question) Well, there is no such expression in English. It’s either: “Now say you would like something to eat.” to which the reply is “I would like something to eat.” Or, “Now say, “Would you like something to eat?”.” to which the reply in Russian is: Не хотели бы вы что-нибудь поесть? Oops!! My bad!! The Russian in the audio is: Вы хотели бы что-нибудь поесть.

188. But that’s a collection of words that has no basis in reality. There is no possible situation that you would say, as a statement: “You want something to eat.” It doesn’t exist as an idea in the real world, and putting it here just adds to the confusion. You can say: “He wants something to eat.” or “They/We/I want something to eat.” but not “You….”. Вы хотели бы.. And then they get back to the real world. Не хотели бы вы что-нибудь поесть? Я хотела бы... – I (a woman) would like… [lit. I would want]

192. хотела бы... хотела (2х) Я хотела бы... (2х) хотела Я хотела бы... Вы хотели бы..

200. хотела хотели So is there a reason and benefit for not explaining the reason in the ending change at this point? Having the man say it now (or earlier) allows you to intuitively understand but instead they’ve left the student hanging and wondering. Да, я хотела бы что-нибудь поесть. Я хотела бы что-нибудь поесть.

206. Не хотели бы вы что-нибудь поесть? Still no explanation or example to illustrate the ending change. Very bad. And the unexplained bits from the end of the previous 2 lessons also remain as ‘black holes’, especially for everyone who has listened to the audios many times and thus many times have been left wondering what the heck that little bit is. Pimsleur may have been on track with a lot of his philosophy and techniques but he’s seriously dropping the ball in the implementation.

And instead of tieing up the lose end regarding the ending change, it goes off in an entirely new direction. I find it hard to believe that Pimsleur really signed this off as ready for production. Я хотела бы что-нибудь выпить. – I would like something to drink.

215. выпить -пить вы- выпить (4х) Я хотела бы что-нибудь выпить. You know, I was just thinking… this is exactly how children learn languages and how you learned English. ;) NOT!!

222. And then the confusion builds again as you’re told: “Try to ask her, ‘Wouldn’t you like something to drink?’” Now, the first thing comes to my mind with an expression like that is: “Wouldn’t you like something to drink instead?” “Wouldn’t you like something to drink first?” “Wouldn’t you like something else to drink?” “Wouldn’t you like something to else drink instead?” All of these are connected to an idea. The idea that is being expressed in Russian is: “Would you like something to drink?”

223. 226. Не хотели бы вы что-нибудь выпить? And then after the English bit I jokingly thought, now she’s gonna say “I don’t know.” And she did!!! Hahahahaa… Не знаю. (2х) Well if you don’t know lady, who does?!?!? 

230. And then to add to my laughter she says she wants something to eat!!!! Я хотела бы что-нибудь поесть. (2х) Make up your mind!!!! A few minutes ago you didn’t know if you wanted something to eat, and said you wanted something to drink, and now you say you don’t know if you want something drink and you want something to eat. This lady doesn’t know if she’s coming or going. And neither does the student if they’re trying to follow along with the ideas which is the foundation of all language: the expression of ideas.

233. Не хотели бы вы что-нибудь выпить? (2х) Нет, спасибо, я не хочу. Asking the student to remember the expression ‘я не хочу’ is like asking someone what colour shoes the guy was wearing who walked past you 5 minutes ago. There’s no way a first time listener will remember this expression which was a tiny bit mixed in with other stuff quit a bit earlier in the lesson. This is not proper or effective ‘spaced repetition’. не хочу

240. And then the narrator says: Say, ‘But I’d like something to eat.’. And the Russian given is: Я хотела бы что-нибудь поесть. What happened to the word ‘But’? (но) And would you believe that it hasn’t been used again since it was introduced in Lesson 3? Seriously! Check for yourself. It wasn’t used at all in Lesson 4 and hasn’t been used yet in Lesson 5. And this is an important word to know! The devil is in the details, and I have to say that Pimsleur fails miserably in the details and in general.

241. And then the narrator says: Say, ‘But I’d like something to eat.’. And the Russian given is: Я хотела бы что-нибудь поесть. What happened to the word ‘But’? (но) And would you believe that it hasn’t been used again since it was introduced in Lesson 3? Seriously! Check for yourself. It wasn’t used at all in Lesson 4 and hasn’t been used yet in Lesson 5. And this is an important word to know! The devil is in the details, and I have to say that Pimsleur fails miserably in the details and in general.

242. She puts it in the second time, but the damage has already been done as far as intuitive learning and clarity are concerned. Но я хотела бы что-нибудь поесть. And the flogging of the dead horse continues with more mindless repetition with no flow of ideas. Не хотели бы вы что-нибудь выпить? In traditional language learning programs which list 5 or 10 examples, the information ‘learned’ in this list immediately goes ‘out the window’ as soon as you move on to the next set. Poof!! It’s gone from memory. That’s just how memory works, it’s natural, so the program has to account for that and use properly spaced repetition within a natural flow of ideas.

246. Нет, спасибо. Но я хотела бы что-нибудь поесть. And then the ‘flow’ continues. ;) Здравствуйте. (2х, him, then her) Скажите, пожалуйста (2х) Пушкинская улица Где Пушкинская улица? Не знаю. (2х) Да, знаю. (She must be blonde!) Я знаю.

258. Пушкинская улица здесь? Нет, не здесь. Не здесь. Пушкинская улица там. (2х) Где Красная площадь? (2х) This is no better than ‘audio flashcards’!!

265. And then the narrator says: How would she say, “It’s here.”? And again they mess up your intuitive learning in a BIG way with the reply: Здесь. (2х) I mean really!! They mess up the English and make it super literal in many other situations, (like “Wouldn’t you like something to drink/eat?”) and then for this they don’t even give the literal Russian which is perhaps an even better reply. Это здесь.

266. And then the narrator says: How would she say, “It’s here.”? And again they mess up your intuitive learning in a BIG way with the reply: Здесь. (2х) I mean really!! They mess up the English and make it super literal in many other situations, (like “Wouldn’t you like something to drink/eat?”) and then for this they don’t even give the literal Russian which is perhaps an even better reply. Это здесь.

267. And then as a ‘reward’ for answering your question correctly, she tells you she would like something to eat!! I think they really did this as an intentional joke!! Я хотела бы что-нибудь поесть. And she says it again as the guy stands there with a blank look on his face thinking “What a strange lady!”. Я хотела бы что-нибудь поесть.

271. And finally he manages to say: Где? And then she’s the one with a blank look on her face with nothing to say and he has to repeat himself: Где? And then I fell off my chair laughing when I heard her reply: Не знаю. :D And she has to repeat herself as the guy is completely dumbstruck. Не знаю.

275. And he’s now in serious need of a stiff drink so suggests that perhaps she would prefer something to drink. Не хотели бы вы что-нибудь выпить? And he stumbles a bit when he repeats the question. Не хотели бы вы что-нибудь выпить? I can’t wait to hear her reply!! Come on guys!! Continue the joke!! ….

276. And he’s now in serious need of a stiff drink so suggests that perhaps she would prefer something to drink. Не хотели бы вы что-нибудь выпить? And he stumbles a bit when he repeats the question. Не хотели бы вы что-нибудь выпить? I can’t wait to hear her reply!! Come on guys!! Continue the joke!! ….

277. Нет, спасибо. (2х) Ah, they didn't make a joke. But then ….. HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!! I was totally off my guard for the next line as she again tells him: Но я хотела бы что-нибудь поесть. She is persistent!!! Gotta give her credit for that!! :D And I LOVE how she emhasizes the last word ‘поесть’, like an insistent child. 

281. She has to repeat herself because the guy is completely at a loss for words!! Я хотела бы что-нибудь поесть. And the real expression for “Very well.” meaning “Alright, whatever.” would be “Ну ладно.” The reply: Очень хорошо. is more like saying ‘Great!’, which might be what he means and is saying it sarcastically. Then the Russian expression also fits.

284. He says it again, as if to convince himself. Очень хорошо. And that’s the end of Unit 5, and we’re all dieing to find out what happens to this poor guy and where he takes her for something to eat!!! 
