Chris Ledoux was born in Biloxi, Mississippi; he was born on October 2, 1948. Chris’s father served in the United States Air Force as a pilot which he was constantly moving around the country. During his child he would regularly visit his grandparent’s farm in Michigan that is where he learned to ride horses and came to love rodeos. Chris participated in his first rodeo at age 13 in Denison, Texas as a bareback rider.
Chris’s family moved to Cheyenne, Wyoming where he attended Cheyenne Central High School. During his high school career he competed and played football, but his constant attention was rodeo bareback riding. Chris won 2 Wyoming state rodeo championship bareback riding titles during high school. He earned a rodeo scholarship to Casper College in Casper, Wyoming. During his junior year of college he won the Intercollegiate National Bareback Riding championships. In 1970 Chris became a professional rodeo cowboy in the PRCA. He married Peggy Rhoads on January 4, 1972 and had 5 children.
To help pay for expenses while traveling on the rodeo circuit, he started composing songs that described his rodeo cowboy lifestyle. He recorded his songs in his friends basement, once recorded he sold them out of the back of his truck at rodeo competitions. In 1976 he won the world bareback riding championship at the national finals rodeo in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. By winning the championship it helped bring him and his songs more to reality for his fans. Chris retired from the PRCA in 1980 to nurse injuries and to spend time with his family. He and his family settled on a ranch in Kaycee, Wyoming.
Soon after retirement he teamed up with Joe Clarke a live sound and recording engineer from Utah. Joe put together Chris Ledoux’s western underground band after Chris asked him for help when he decided to give music as a full time career a shot. Joe then took Chris and his band to Salt Lake City’s Sandy Station to meet the band hot topic. After a meeting with the lead drummer at the Weston Plaza Hotel in Vernal, Utah Chris and his new band rehearsed with Joe Clark for the first time in the hotel bar. Chris and his band began writing and recording their songs. By 1982 he had sold over 250,000 copies of albums with little to no marketing. By the end of the decade he had self released 22 albums.
In August of 2000 he was diagnosed with. With the severity of his medical condition he was placed on top of the liver transplant list. On October 7, 2000 he received a liver transplant after one of his close friends Garth Brooks tried to donate one of his livers but was turned down by medical doctors. After his liver transplant he released 2 additional albums. In November of 2004 he was diagnosed with cholangiocarcinoma and underwent radiation treatment until his death. He pasted way on March 9, 2005 from complications of the disease at a Casper, Wyoming hospital.
After his death he was inducted into the Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame in 2005 and was the first person to ever be inducted in two categories, bareback riding and notables’ category for contributions to the sport through his music. Also in 2005 he was awarded the Pioneer Award in the Academy of Country Music. On October 26, 2006 he was inducted into the Rodeo Hall of Fame at the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
The first song that I chose was Bareback Jack. Chris wrote this song while he was a student at Casper College. Bareback Jack is about a young boy’s life story of being a bareback rider. This song was released October 28, 1971 on the album Songs of Rodeo Life by Chris LeDoux under exclusive license to Capital Records Nashville.
The second song that I picked is Hooked on a 8-second ride. This song is about why a rodeo cowboy does what they do. This song was released in 1988 on the album Chris Ledoux and the saddle boogie band.
The third song I chose is Western Skies. It is about Chris himself and why he chose to settle on his ranch in Wyoming. The song was released July 31, 1992 on the album WhatchaGonna Do With a Cowboy.
The fourth song I decided to do is Copenhagen; this song was recorded with Toby Keith. The song is about a cowboys love for chewing tobacco. This song was originally released on August 3, 1995 on the album Rodeo Rock and Roll Collection.
The fifth song I decided is Stampede; this song is about a cowboy on a cattle drive. As he is lying down for the night the cattle rise up and take charge. He takes his pony to the lead and it stumbles, he sits up to see he is the path of the stampede. This song was released on March 19, 1996 on the album Stampede.
